Hi,

I have bought my LapTop from Velocity Micro, and its called the NoteMagix B50 Student edition. I am still awaiting for my laptop to arrive. Can't wait to recieve this. Any way here's my question, I hope can be answered.

The CL-56 only comes with a CDRW drive and I would rather have a DVD-+RW combo drive.

1. What DVD-+RW drives Fit this Laptop?

When I recieve this I will give my review.

Thanks,
James

Hi,

Why doesn't anyone reply? Have I stumped everyone?

1. How can I figure out for myself what drives are supported?

Thanks,
James

Most laptop opticals are universal with the exception of Certain vendors, Compaq, IBM, etc who can rig systems so only their components will run in them. i.e.-I had to upgrade my laptop BIOS in order to install 3rd party (Crucial) memory. For a generic laptop sold to be custom built I would guess that it should be pretty compatible with most drives. The only issues that you might bump into is whether the optical you buy is set to be a master or slave and whether you need an adapter for you laptop. The drive setting can usually be resolved with some firmware flashing, just look around for some help. Also, check in your device settings what your optical is running at, master/primary or slave/ secondary, when you get it. Since you are getting an optical in your system, any needed adapter could likely be scavenged for the new drive. If it is a non removable drive you may not need an adapter, but it all depends on ho the motherboard is set up internally.

Check out this NEC ND-5500a. It's got pretty sweet specs for a laptop drive and is dirt cheap compared to other brands. NEC is a pretty solid brand if ya didn't know btw. =)

I've read that these DVD-/+RW drives sold from Newegg are set to Master/Primary

Hope this helps.

optical drives for the cl-56

Thanks, Didn't think anyone would answer.

I have been looking on the net for sometime before I posted my messages. No where on google does it say what optical drives are compatible for the cl-56. I guess its only figured out by visualy looking inside and comparing--thats unfortunate for me.

Thanks,
James

Check out this post

It's the post from Rincewind with the parts spreadsheet. In the second image, there's four entries for DVD writers. I would imagine those being safe bets.

Well Newegg is usually good about returns and even if it doesn't pan out you should post your results so others will learn from your experience as well. =)

cl-56 optics

I saw that thread, I actually downloaded the info from the ftp site someone listed. I wasn't sure how accurate that sheet was but I also read somewhere that installing 3rd party optical drives can be problem matic. For example, master/ slave thing, fitting, and thats all I can remember for the moment.

I will definetly let everyone know. I really like this site, people here are really nice. I am still waiting for my laptop to arrive. I ordered it on the 4th of august. The vender ran out of cl-56 cases--go figure!!

Thanks for the help, and if any new info please post more.

Theres only a few manufacturers that make Optical drivers, many are just sourced out to the manufacturers by many big names like (Sony,Dell Asus to name a few) or panels changed so they seem like a different drive. In many cases as long as you have the main housing for the drive (housing cradle) you can change your drive to suit....Any way most Liteon, Nec, BTC Toshiba will fit NP.

NOT! They sent me a used video card (previously opened and returned probably) so I sent it back. They wouldn't budge on the 15% restock fee even though I told them I wasn't paying full price for used goods. So screw newegg and while I'm on it totally screw bestbuy.com. But that's a whole nother story, only MWave.com works for me.

yeah best buy sux, however, they always let you return items no questions asked. They just got sued for selling old items as new.

Add Babbages and most other electronics boutiques. I hate places that have great return policies only to sell opened stuff as new.
