Windows XP "Default Beep" sound heard before every shutdown

Thread Starter
I have a Gateway 450XL that I bought in June, (great laptop by the way). Anyway, since I can remember, it has made the "Default Beep" sound just before the windows shutdown sound. This happens every single time. I don't get any error messages with the beep, but I'd like to know what it is, and how to stop it.

Any Ideas?

Stop the Annoying defualt beep

Hi,

I would think there is something wrong, windows doesn't usuallly beep unless so. Are you sure there is nothing wrong with your computer? Does it hang for a long time when logging off? Restart your computer and watch it all the way through and see if it does any thing funny. You can also go in the control panel, Admin tools, Event viewer. That will tell you all errors you are getting. If no errors, just do this below. Hope this helps alittle.

Disabling sounds; Quick fix

1. go into control panel
2. audio and sound devices
3. click the sounds tab
4. choose no sounds.

That should stop the beeps!!

Ok, I looked in the event viewer and found this message for every time I've logged off since June 25th:

Quote:
Windows saved user registry while an application or service was still using the registry during log off. The memory used by the user's registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is no longer in use.

This is often caused by services running as a user account, try configuring the services to run in either the LocalService or NetworkService account.
Is there any way to figure out which service is causing the problem?

Hi,

Hey try this download here. This will fix problems with your registry. I have used this and it works well. When I log off my computer it used to hang because certain programs would not shut down and It fixed that.

1. Have you scanned your computer for any spyware?

Found info about the 1517 error

This is funny I have the same exact error as you, however, I don't have the beeping problem.

When you went in the event viewer, did you delete all the errors and then restart the computer. This way you can see what errors are current.

just right click on Application, security, and system, then choose clear all events. then restart and see what all errors you got. You can also search the errors on google.

Found on google:

PRB: Warning Error 1517 in Event Viewer after First Restart

Ok, I cleared the logs and restarted, and the same one appeared in the application log once, for the time that I shut it down. I might try that registry program out and see if that helps at all. I've had the computer since June 22, but the warning in the event viewer only started appearing since June 25. I had been installing a lot of software during that first week, so I'm guessing it is being caused by something I installed.

I use McAfee antivirus and Adaware and Spybot, and they are all updated.

I'll see if I can figure anything else out with it.

errors continued

Whats Up,

I fixed all my errors, and I don't have what you got anymore.

Just click on each error, and look up the error code in google.
Just keep looking until you find a good site to fix the problem.
Hope I helped enough.

Take the easy way out.

Reinstall windows with your recovery cds.

OK, I'll try that.

As much "fun" as reinstalling Windows is, I think a few Google searches might be a tad easier.

If you got yours fixed, maybe there's hope for mine.

Thanks for helping.

Wait, were you sarcastic about the joy of installing Windows? What about all the great promises they give you saying "this windows is more stable?" What about when you figure out all those promises are broken? Is that not exciting every time? Does it not make you go "When will the next Windows come out so I can install it?" Huh? I enjoy it...

But I think if I experience the joys of installing Windows too often, I might not enjoy it and look forward to it as much. I wouldn't want to start thinking about how much time I was wasting reading about the exciting new feature in IE or the refreshing new UI which will make my computer more easy to use than ever.

About the error problem: I found a utility from Microsoft, no less, which can be found here.

It identified and stopped the 1517 error from appearing in the application log. (It was Sygate Personal Firewall that was causing the error to appear.)

However, it did not stop the beep sound on shutdown.

Maybe there is a utility to fix errors

Hi again,

I bet there is a utility somewhere that can possibly fix windows errors. Windows xp has been out for so long, someone out there must have become tired of all the errors and created a nice program. If ya Find one let me know.

Reinstalling windows is awesome, I love it.

Waiting 2 hours for the installation and then get a million errors because windows doesn't like your hardware. Then spend another hour or two to get the correct drivers. Then installing all that stuff----

Hey, Linux is not for The average. Linux has its problems to though. I bet in 200 years windows will be perfect!! no laughing

Recommendations:

I am getting my first laptop, which is Velocity Micro Notemagix B50 it's a CL-56. No way do I want to reinstall on two systems now. Anyway, I am gonna get an External Hard Drive because I love downloading programs(FreeWare, OpenSource, etc...). Windows for some reason acts crazy if one keeps Installing and reinstalling programs.

1. Get an External Hard drive and put all new stuff there.
2. Do a Fresh install, update all your drivers, Programs and then Just create an Image. Then Install and Uninstall a way. My only problem with this is I don't know how to make cd images that are bootable. Isn't that silly.

No, Microsoft would never make Windows perfect. Maybe the old features will be perfect, but they'll purposely add new "improved" features only to let them have bugs.

The only utility I found was the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service from Microsoft. I posted the link for it above. That stopped the errors from appearing in the log but not the beeping.

It doesn't seem to be causing any harm, so I guess I'll ignore it for now. Considering I'm leaving for college in 3 days, I don't have time to reinstall everything. I think I'll leave that for if it crashes sometime. As long as it is only a beep on shut down, I guess I can live with it.

My only Linux experience is a few live cds I've made. Linux is nice though.

Gateway makes second hard drive for the modular bay on the 450XL, which I might look into eventually.

beeping

well sorry I wasn't much help!! Good luck in college. I start up again next week.
Did that utility get rid of all your errors or just that 1 error?I guess I will keep that utility handy.

How long did it take you to install linux? I remember watching my friend do it, and it took him for ever. He started out with long hair and ended up with a crew cut.....

What is your Major?

I only had that one error to begin with, and it fixed it. Now there are no 1517 errors appearing in the application log. It seems to work pretty well.

The linux cd that I made is a Live CD. I downloaded an ISO image, then burned it to a CD. The CD is bootable, so when you start the computer with the CD in, runs linux off of the cd without touching the hard drive. The one I tried was the Suse 9.1 Personal Live CD. It's about 700MB to download, which took about 6 hours on my cable connection.

I don't think I'm quite ready to install linux yet, but I might like to set up a dual boot eventually.

I've got a i9300 and get this beep on shutdown too, along with the 1517 event ID. Has anyone found a solution to this? I think it started happening when I set up the bluetooth that came with it.
