Best Buy: Acer VS HP/Compaq

have been reading a lot into this forum regarding the laptops to buy.

I am going to university now, so I figure I'm gonna need a notebook pc. Given my budget, I have shortlisted the following

Acer Aspire 1661WLCi (a bit expensive)
P-4 2.8Ghz, 512MB RAM, 40GB HDD,
15.4" WXGA Wide Screen LCD,
Radeon 9700 64MB dedicated,
Wifi Support
around $1400 US

OR

Compaq Presario 2197CA (quite cheap)
AMDAthlon XP-M 2800+
512MB RAM, 40GB HDD,
15" XGA TFT LCD,
Radeon 9000 64MB Shared,
Wifi support
around $1000 US

So, I am in a fix here. I don't know if I should fork out another 400$ for the Acer. My requirements do include frequent gaming, and I have read that the Compaq can play Farcry at 20FPS, or something, so its not that bad!

also, I am staying in Vancouver, Canada. So, if someone can suggest shipping, local dealers, anything else, iut would be wondeful.

Your suggestions would be very helpful! Also, if you can suggest any other model within the given price range, it would be nice!!

for $1280 or so, you can get the Acer 2012wlmi with ATI 9700 graphics card and 15.4" WXGA. go for it.

Yep the difference between the MR900 and MR9700 is quite a bit when it comes to gaming. Time for a side job for a few weeks before school starts ;-)

I just got off newegg.com, and ebuyer.com. The Acer 1661WLCi is now for $1225!!!! Is that sweet or what... The Acer 2012WLMi is for $1355, and I dont see myself spending almost $100 for DVD RW, rest all is almost same, except for 20GB less, but I can always upgrade.. So what do you think of this offer.

Another question which bothers me, and to which I have read quite a fwe posts, is the shipment to Canada. Here, the same laptop is more expensive that what it would be in the US, So is there any way I can get the unit from US, and get it shipped to Canada? plz. help me, this is important!!!

If you are looking at the Acer 1161WLMi for just a few dollars more you can get the 1662WLMi. Some differences - 1662 has 800MHZ FSB , 1661 533 MHZ FSB, 1662 3.0 P4 with Hyper Treading, 1661 2.8 no Hyper Treading, 1162 has 60GB HD, 1661 40GB. 1662 for sure has the DVD +/- R/W. Not sure but I don't believe the 1661 has DVD +/- RW.

I just went to the dealers here to check up the prices on the Acers. Here they are:

Acer 1661WLCi, CDs. 1823
Acer 1662WLMi, CDs. 2055
Acer 2012WLMi, CDs. 2250

So I am really in favour of extra 20gigs, and DVDR, but I dont see myself spending $250 for those. I still have to barter for the carry bag, and extra mouse.

I would also like to know the situation of bargains, Can I ask them to drop the prices or something else, like maybe add stuff to the package? Anything like this happened with the dealers in Canada? I would really like to hear your take on this. I am also getting info. saying that the prices are going to be slashed in the next few months... So should I wait or should I barter!!! HELP!
