SFF owners wanting to use GeForce 6800

I'm awaiting delivery of my BFG 6800 GT OC, and have been concerned about the power requirements. I've got a Monarch Hornet Pro SFF with a 270 watt power supply. The 6800's specs call for a 300 watt minimum power supply, so I've looked far and wide for one. Well, just a few minutes ago, I finally found a power supply designed specifically for an SFF. It's a Topower 350 watt SFX power supply offered on www.monarchcomputer.com. I just ordered it, so I should be set once my 6800 arrives.

I thought the minimum was a 350W and recommended was 430W or higher. It can run on a 300W PS?

I think the higher (430W) is for the 6800 Ultra. According to BFG, 300W is the minimum recommended for the 6800 GT OC.

Well, it would be more helpful if you gave some more details on processor, # dimms, # HDDs, #Optical Drives, etc. But, I do think 350W is too little for todays computer requirements

with a new PSU it is not all about the wattage. You have to be careful that when a PSU says it can output 450watts that that number is not a peak number but a sustained amount. Else it can pour 450watts in your system for like 10min only maybe.

Furthermore, it is more important that you have enough AMPS on the +12v rail. The amd64 saps from there an so does the 6800 series if I am not mistaken. At least 20+ amps on +12v should be available. Else your system might become sluggish since components do not receive optimal power at the same time.

One shop dude in taiwan actually told me that he wasn't sure if the 6800 series would fit in an SFF box Let us know if it does.

(I saw a 9800 XT in it and if the had closed the box the fan would blow against it and therefore they let it open)

One of the main reasons I went with the Hornet Pro was its ability to handle a 6800. Here are some pics of such a setup (scroll about halfway down the page to see the pics).

I'll be sure to post my experience with installing/using the 6800 in my system...whenever my 6800 arrives.

Alright!

Please do and if you would not mind include some temperature readings please. I am very curious about those values in such a 'packed' system.

wow, nice...but i hope that the GPU really isn't that close to the wndow, hence I would think that it would restrict airflow...btw Monarch is 20 min from me...best of luck hope to see some benches....

try http://forums.sudhian.com/ in the SFF section you will see that many already run the 6800GT without any problem on 240/250 Watt PSUs. In terms of SFF that forum may be more suited to your needs. Good luck.
