does anyone know any laptops that are small like the powerbook g4 (with the 1'' sides, not the 12'' screen) but run windows?

a powerbook g4 with virtual PC installed!

but it wouldn't boot from the start-up, it would just be a windowed OS

I don't think any sager machines are compareable (2720 comes closest) but the fujitsu lifebook S series would come close to size and weight and my choice (s2000 or s6000)

IBM has a new one out. Relatively small, runs 7 hours on batteries. dvd/cdrw
$3000.00 price tag though.

the Chembook 2050 and the Acer Travelmate 803 Would be worth looking into. Both are just over 1" and have pretty decent specs.

I bought Gateway Solo 3450 out form eBay... it's PentiumIII 750 with 320MB ram 20GB HDD.... it's only $420.... It have enough power to run MS Office XP, internet, play some silly games while I'm in campus. It's only 0.8" thick, 3lbs with 3.5hrs battery. And it looks gorgeous with Silver Magnisium Alloy case.

Well, it does have CDROM or DVD or CDRW at the base station, but not at the machine.

Frankly, I'm not that impressed with the ThinkPad T40.

Sure, it has quite an outstanding battery life, and can
be ordered with an 80GB HD (at only 4200 rpm though).

But its overall perfornance is at best middling or average
compared to similarly configured Centrino-class laptops
(the Dell D800 scored higher benchmarks in the reviews),
and is one of the priciest Pentium M notebooks out there.

7 hr battery life
4.9 pound w/battery
DVD/CD-RW
1.6 P4 M
512 RAM
1' thick
available 64 MB video card

ultimate portability, decent power, great cooling... the total package.

Tekvic, I re-read your original post and agree that the IBM T40
does indeed come very close to your original specs for your
dream machine:
"small like the powerbook g4 (with the 1'' sides, not the 12'' screen) but run windows"

But not inexpensive if your budget is limited - for about $3,349.00
based on your specs, and that's for the higher-end base
configuration, without additional goodies.

Also note that the groundbreaking 7 hours of battery life is
achievable only with the bigger 10.8V, 6,600mAh battery,
not the 4,400mAh one.

Not sure if this is an issue, but no obvious mention of a
Firewire port either?

Fujitsu Lifebook

Fujitsu Lifebook P5000, my friend. I'm buying one of these babies on about a month. Fujitsu.com has specs/pictures, and www.leog.net is a great forum community for these sweet little ultraportables.

rbf - Nice to see you back, I didnt think we'd hear from you again. Sounds like you are doing a 180 degree turn, going from the biggest laptop on the market to the smallest
Why the change of heart?
What happened to wanting the M10 so bad?
I am still waiting for the benchmarks of the 5600 Fx and the 9600 Pro. If they are similar then I may end up getting the Toshiba 5200. Its a close race between that and the Sager 5680...

...

Heh, figured someone would pick up on my change. I actually just ordered my gaming desktop, with Radeon 9800 Pro. I'm gonna use that as my gaming machine in college, and upgrade it over the next 4 years. Then I'm ordering the P5000 to bring home on weekend, play dvds on the go, etc. It actually plays Warcraft 3 perfectly, so I can even do some decent gaming on the go. And, to top it all off, it gets 5.5 hours of battery life with the standard battery, and 10.5 with the modular!!
I think my decision to get two systems was best for me.
Hayes, the M10 reviews so far have been dissapointing...I'm starting to feel much better about ditching the Sager route...let me know which way you go.

Wow, that Fujitsu P5000 sure sounds sweet - up to 10.5 hours,
just 3.85 lbs light!

Alas, looking at these specs:
IntelĀ® PentiumĀ® M processor 900MHz
Intel 855GM chipset with up to 64MB SHARED memory
10.6" wide-format XGA TFT display
it's not in the running for someone like me who doesn't already
have a desktop system, but instead needs an all-in-one
notebook system that's powerful enough to process intensive
graphics tasks, render video, and play 3d games at the same
time- while being portable enough to be carried around on a daily
basis with a battery run time of at least 3-4 hours...

the way I see it, there really is no point in buying a huge notebook from sager. If you have a 2.7'' 12 pounder with 1 hour battery life...then its not portable, it will just sit on your desk. Then why not get a more powerful desktop for 1/2 the price ?

With the 1'' sides, it'll be considered small for years to come. The 1.6 cpu does bother me, but I have to be realistic. This also comes with a swaping bay, so when the technology comes along you can buy a dvd-r/cdrw and slide it right it. It alos fits an extra battery.

I'm not sure about those uber-small 10 inch notebooks, but a 14.1'' screen @ 4.9 pounds (on t40) is amazing to me!

Well I like having the option of being able to use my "portable" desktop anywhere in the house (in front of the tv, desk, bedroom, coffee table, work) and then being able to take it to LAN parties or with you on trips is another plus. It's just much more practical for me than a desktop and I want the most powerful so it's pretty much a no-brainer for me.
