Acer Aspire 1681wlmi resolution?

I just received the 1681 from newegg and it seems to be a great machine. This is, however, my first laptop and also my first experience with 15.4" widescreen.

According to the ATI card, the max resolution is 1200 x 800. Is there any way to get a higher resolution (other than using an external monitor) or will I need to get used to the smaller resolution (I usually max out my desktop monitors)?

Also, as reported elsewhere, the battery life is very limited. This isn't a big deal for me (always near outlets), but does anyone know if I can get a better battery if I decide to travel? I've heard the European version of this laptop comes with a better battery.

Thanks for any advice.

Great! Thanks for the tip. I'm at work now, but I'll try it tomorrow. No bluetooth right? I think newegg has a typo.

Can you guys give us a more extended review on the 1681? Does it get hot? Does it get loud? How is gaming? Is the Folio design nice? Build quality?
I'm still split between the 2012 and the 1681.

Thanks!

Well, unfortunately I have been working a lot and have only had a chance to play with the machine a little bit.

The folio design is very nice. The rounded edges makes the laptop feel more 'comfortable.' The keyboard is decent. As a first-time laptop owner, it feels a bit springy, but the keyboard layout is very natural.

Build quality seems excellent. The programmable shortcut keys are a nice touch. This notebook is not 'latchless' though, but I don't think that's a big deal. It is slim and portable for a 15.4" machine.

I have run basic operations and adobe creative suite apps so far, and it runs very well. No sign of lag.

I've heard the battery life is very short, but I'm almost always near an outlet so I'm not too concerned.

I'm not much of a gamer, but I do play NBA Live 2003 fairly often. I loaded it and ran the start of a game, but haven't really sat down to play yet. It played as fast and well as my desktop (Sony RS 3.2) with very little distortion from the stretching to widescreen. The stretching algorithm works well with subject matter in the middle of the screen being distorted less than subjects near the perimiter.

I wish I could give you benchmark scores and all that, but frankly, I'm a laptop newbie and like I said... not much of a gamer.

So far, as someone who doesn't like to compromise from my desktop performance, this machine feels like its equal, and I got it very cheap from egg.

Love the 1681!!!

cphbynight: I was also in your situation but i've being long past torn--i am going for the 1681. Order will be placed within a week.

This is very sturdy and solid notebook. If you careless about battery life, its the clear winner!! I will probably be gettin the 8-cell from acer within weeks/months of use--i think it should already be avaliable.

For more detailed discussion about 1681, see both the notebook general and review forums.

All right now...

Home from work and playing for a few hours. This machine rocks. Sitting side-by-side next to my desktop, the screen is an improbement. The DVD burner works great and the software is very easy. Played some NBA Live and it runs at full-max details plenty fast. Sounds good on external speakers.

Still hoping to find a way to get the game to run in standard format. Most of the players are 'squashed' a bit and look like Charles Barkley. I'll probably get used to it.

Runs a bit warm under the palm rest, but not hot. DVD drive is audible, but not obnoxious.

I will also grab the 8-cell battery once it's available.

I highly recommend this computer for the money.

Battery

Take a look around for a replacement battery. The replacement battery is listed as the same for the 1681, 4000, and the 4500. The US Acer site accurately notes the battery life of the 1681, and since the 4000 and 4500 are listed as having 5 hours of battery life, let's hope that the replacement battery is similar to the European one! Only drawback is most places are out of stock and the price is $140 US.
