Hi! I have found a Gateway M505X/XL user name ai42 on this forum and it seems like he has 2GB on his Gateway M505X/XL. Here is the link of the picture. Can someone tell me if this is actually true. Please tell me that my eyes are not fooling me!!! http://notebookforums.com/attachment...achmentid=2256

I also read 2GB. I don't know if he will get the full benefit of it due to motherboard limitation.
One thing I can tell you is that 1GB make mine just a bit warmer than stock 512MB (just right at ram modules position).

I wanna know about this too. It seems like every other laptop I have seen supports up to 2GB of memory, and its kind of odd that the M505 does not. (at least thats what they say). But if b2s is noticing a heat increase with just 1GB, they might have limited it to prevent heat from damaging components. It has the capability (like M6809's have the ability for 2 but eMachines warranties up to 1.25) but it isnt recommended.

Since I got this Tonado chillpad, I have never heard fan running except when gaming.
Even when gaming, fan woud stop within 1 min once closing gaming program. Pretty amazing. So I guess -- with good external cooling system, one could try 2GB. I don't know how much gain you will get. Whether it is worth the money

You know what? It does seem very ODD that the Gateway M505X/XL does not support 2GB "said Gateway". Why not, shouldn't the motherboard be able to handle 2GB since it supports Intel Centrino? The centrino is not out dated!

Ok, I just download a program called "PC Wizard 2004" and it checked my Gateway M505XL system information It said, "Max. Memory Size: 2000 MB" and it said, "Max. Module Size :1000 MB"

So, I do believe that the Gateway M505X/XL can be upgraded to 2GB. You can check it out for yourself by downloading this program.

Great finding. Thanx for info and link

I wish you found this sooner. I could have spent my money a lot wiser and ended up getting more ram.

In order to have a gig the way i did was getting 2 512mb rams and put the stocks in my drawers. Would have been sweet to get a gig + 256 stock. I spent ~140 each for SimpleTech 512mb (this is to avoid my warrenty as stated by Gateway). I think a gig ram would run around slightly under $300 from SimpleTech.

Oh well. So far I satisfy with my upgrade. Beside I am getting a new DTR system very soon. So my 505 will only be dedicated for work only.

What?!!! If I upgraded my Gateway M505XL memory, my gateway warranty will be void? or just the memory will be void under warranty?
If you go over or beyond what they recommend, your warranty is no good. Read those warrenty policies very carefully.

Has anyone upgraded their Gateway M505X/XL to 2GB? I do believe this is possible since I download the software called "PC Wizard 2004" which said the M505X/XL support up to 2GB.

I am planning to break the 1GB barrier as soon as i get some cash and a faster hard drive.

2 Gig is overkill on todays notebooks
Just my opinion

I have a gig in my lappy and i'm satisfied with it. It only uses it when I video edit and stuff like that.

Coolnet:
which hard drive are you looking into getting. I thought about going for one of those 7200rpm hard drives but they are really expensive and for less I can get a 5400 rpm one with more hard drive space.
The Gateway M505 series cant read hard drives larger than 60GB, so I was going to get the highly praised 7K60 from Hitachi. Although, if you get a 5400RPM, there isnt that big of a difference and you still have a massive speed boost from 4200RPM.

Gateway Support says that M505's can't accept more than 60GB, but should we trust the same people that said 1GB is the maximum?

hmm, I wonder that myself about not being able to handle more the 60GB. I think it is odd that there are limit on the amount of GB Hard Drive that the M505X/XL can handle.

Check SimpleTech weblink and you will find out that you can get 80GB hdd into M505 series like this http://www.simpletech.com/upgNav/ind...ileID=330&rd=&
I think that it does not have to be SimpleTech brand by looking at its spec.

This machine is just full of suprises, ain't it.

Wow!!! What other suprises does the AMAZING M505X/XL have? Is there a chance to upgrade the ATI graphic card? I will be speechless if the graphic card is upgradable. SHOCKING!!!!!
Unfortunately, you can't upgrade GPU. It is permanently attached with the unit. At least I would not want to try to remove it even if I can find perfect fit of better GPU.
You can definitely upgrade CPU to Dothan2.0 though

I believe in all, you can change the Hard Drive to one higher than 60GB, change the WiFi Card to Intel 2200 (keep Centrino Logo) or Wireless A/B/G (Loose Centrino Logo), optimize the AV Panel, add a BlueTooth adapter, mod the keyboard to light up, add a second hard drive, increase the 2GB limit on the AV Panel, change the CDRW/DVD to a DVD-RW, put in 2GB of memory, and swap the 1.4/1.5Ghz Banias for a 2.0Ghz Dothan Pentium-M processor.

I am trying to look into changing the LCD and adding a 2nd drive w/o loosing your sub.
