Gateway M505X/XL with 2GB - Page 2

I don't know what is in M505X, but mine got Intel Pro/Wireless 2200B/G already. Technically all M505 suppose to only have 802.1b adapter. I can't complain.

The Gateway M505X/XL can be upgraded to only 2.0 Dothan Pentium-M and not higher?
Yes, because they changed the socket in the newer processors. The Banias and Dothan are exactly the same except for the L2 cache and Dothan is only less than a millimeter bigger than Banias.

Ack! This is my 200th post! Thank you! Thank you alll! I would like to thank God, my mother, my father (pulls out very long list), my sister, my brother, my aunt suzie, my dog spot ...

I just bought a Hitachi 7k60, upgrading from a 4200rpm, that should be a pretty decent increase in performance. My next upgrade will be a 1gb stick of ram for 1280mb total.

I suppose after that...further down the road, I'd consider the 2ghz processor upgrade...how much are those chips going for?
oh, also, are there minipci .11b/bluetooth cards? I'd love not to have to use a dongle.

The Intel Pentium M 755 2.0 GHz, 400MHz FSB, on-die 2MB L2 Cache
Newegg Price: $639

Maybe I do the upgrade in the next 3-4 years from now.
Supposedly they might stop making those chips soon.
They would stop making 2.0 Dothans, their current flagship mobile chip? Heh, not in the next 2-3 years they wouldn't.

By the way, there is no reason why M505 shouldn't accept harddrives of ANY capacity. Just that for now the largest 2.5" drive is 80 GB and a while ago it was 60 GB -- which is why some might've gotten the wrongful impression the machine wouldn't accept any larger drives. Once the 100+ GB mobile drives are released, the laptop will be able to use them.

has anyone swapped the 1.4/1.5 for the 2.0 Dothans yet? I'm curious.....

CoolNet:
Why are you replacing your LCD? and for which one? .... and you were talking about mods up top. Have you made your keyboard light up? and, what do you mean by 2nd hard drive? you mean swapping or external right, not internal? And that bluetooth adapter, via usb/firewire/pcmcia right nothing internal? let me know....

great thread.....

The reason why Gateway M505X/XL owners got the wrong impression about the machine wouln't accept larger than 60GB is because Gateway said so. Also, they said the M505X/XL can be upgrade up to only 1GB of RAM. We now know that it is false.

What DVDRW drives could we use?
according to this article : http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20040923A1001.html , on Oct. 17th the 2ghz dothan's price is supposed to be cut by 33.6%.

A - I just want to know if its possible, just in case I want to give myself a higher resolution (WSXGA+, WUXGA+).
B - I was planning to make my keyboard light up this summer, but I never got around to it (and regret it). Its a really cool mod that would help greatly especially when your typing in the dark (no need for USB light).
C - There is a second IDE slot in the same port as the subwoofer, so if you wanted to add a second hard drive, it is possible. You just swap out the sub with the drive. (i.e: Its either a drive or a sub, unless you can get real creative with a 2GB/4GB/5GB CF card)
D - There is no space for an internal bluetooth adapter (unless you find a really good Mini-PCI card with that built in) so I was going for the most low-profile BT solution I could find. There is a BT adapter card for the SD card slot, and since I dont use that slot very often, I feel it would do fine there. And it leaves your USB/Firewire/PCMCIA slot free for other devices. The catch? Last time I heard its $175 for one of those tiny cards.

does a "really good mini-pci" card exist that has built-in wifi and bluetooth? No intel centrino solutions or comparable?

Anyone know what DVDRW drives we could use? I'm interested in getting rid of my 8x external for an internal solution.
Someone posted a link to one from these forums ($199) but I forgot the thread name ... I dont know if a "really good mini-pci" card exists.

Added Support ... NOT from Gateway...

If you didnt already know, the Gateway M505X/XL is just a relabeled Gigabyte N601. Everything about these machines are exactly the same. If you ever needed drivers for your laptop and dont want to resort or cant find the Drivers disc, they have all of the drivers on Gigabyte's web site. PS: Gigabyte says it can handle up to 2GB of memory, and they give you a chart of comaptible memory too.

Processor upgrade

So has anyone done this? I opened my 505 up and popped in an Intel 2200 802.11b/g mini pci card (works great) and while there I looked at the processor. It appears to be fixed to the main board (i.e. no way to remove it) How are others claiming that it can be upgraded....is the cpu easily removable/replaceable?

Frottage
The CPU is removable, but nobody said it would be easy. The processor is directly below the fan, which is below the top right corner of the bottom of your laptop, which containts the on/off switch. To get to it, you REALLY have to take your computer COMPLETELY apart, but since all Pentium-M chips up to this point use the same chipset and socket and are roughply the same size, in theory you are able to upgrade the processor. However, nobody has tried to do this mod to date, but if you feel your up to it, feel free.
What exactly had to be removed to get the new wireless card in and did you then upgrade to the calexico 2 driver. Thanks
post #40 of 65
To change your wireless card, you have to disassemble your laptop. You use the 'Replace Keyboard' guilde on gateway's site in order to get to the card, which is directly below the keyboard. Then you just disconnect the antenna and swap out the cards. Reconnect the antenna, and reinstall the keyboard and stuff. Then once you fix the driver issues, your set to go. Search this forum for upgading M505's wireless card to find how people did this mod.
