Buying new laptop: Sager 8790 or Dell XPS? Any thoughts?

Hi everyone,
I am going to buy a laptop soon and considering Dell XPS and Sager 8790... I seen some posts here comparing Alienware Area 51m and Dell XPS, how about the Sager 8790? I am using it for gaming and will be the only PC I am using (no Desktop). Therefore, speed & screen quality would be of top concern. How about HD differences? Screen quality? Other concerns-keyboard, internal wireless wifi? Is there difference with processors-prescott/northwood? Pretty flexible with budget (but not Extreme Edition limits). Let me know your thoughts. Thank you.
Happy Gaming,
John

If you can get the XPS with a Mobility Radeon 9800 (M12) before the new Sager with PCI-e technology is on the market then I'd go for the Dell. From what I've read in the XPS forum there's quite a backlog on that GPU though, so the PCI-e cards may be out for Sager before the Dell even arrives. Then there's the question of preferred display, 8790 has a 17" WSXGA+ display and the XPS has a 15.4" WUXGA display with a higher native resolution than the Sager... although there's nothing like watching a DVD on a super glossy 17" wide screen.

Sager has two HDD bays, to my knowledge the Dell only has one. Processor: for frequencies up to 3.4GHz the Northwood outperforms the Prescott, however in testing the Prescotts of higher frequencies (3.6GHz and up) were able to outperform the respective Northwood. The Prescott uses more power and thus has a shorter battery life than the Northwood.

i would suggest waiting until around the middle/end of september to buy because, according to Adam, Sager is going to release info on their next-gen lappys around that time. However i would still recommend the 9100/XPS with the M18 (not M12 ) as it is currently the fastest lappy out there (and also one of less-attractive ones, but i'm prolly getting one too so i wont bitch ). Good luck shopping!

ATI's name-giving really has me confused.

If you can wait..go for PCIE if gaming is important to you..you'll like the fact you can upgrade your video card..

Buy an XPS now, play with it for a few weeks, then return it and get a PCI-Express equipped 8790.

well, just to be safe i am going to do a couple cheap upgrades on my old dell desky so that i can last for a while w/o a new computer. of course, then it won't seem like very much of an upgrade with the new comp...dammit i hate when i start thinking like this! *bashes head on wall*

You know, the PCI-e notebooks available shortly from Sager will have the X600 cards in them so the speed will be equal to the existing 9700, still far less than the 9800 available in the Dell 9100/XPS model.

However, the screen on the Sager 17inchers is a world beyond that of the Dell, in size and in quality.

However, as I understand it (and in my experience with the 8790) the Sager's are too hot for me to use.

And the Dell is too ugly.

The 5690, is great, but now I've fallen in love with 17inch wide screen. I can't go back.

Also, to add to the info, if all goes as Sager plans, the graphics will not be from the X600 either. It will be based off the next level of graphics from the two leading manufacturers. It may release with just one and the other option become available shortly after. It depends on when the manufacturers are able to get what's already been tested out the door.
When the MR9800 appeared based on the X800 core, I knew ATI was sitting on the PCI-Express version.

I know sharakkhal, i was thinking that too. I also agree about the 17" widescreens, i have used quite a few 17" powerbooks, and i must say it is quite hard to walk back over to the 15" one after trying that one out @ the apple store...

P.S. i know this is kinda (well, really ) off-topic, but which would you say is wiser to do while waiting for PCI-E, btw: upgrade my desktop or buy a cheap lappy like an emachines m6805, acer 2012wlmi/1662wlmi....lol i know this is a really dumb question but i'm kinda desperate now for a new comp, and i dont feel like waiting until 2005 with the POS that i have right now.

Yeah, I read that, but I was basing that off of what Eurocomm is advertsing now, which is more likely to be what is actually available shortly.

I would go for the sager because you can't beat the 17in screen the dell is fast but the sager has so much more ,tv turner, two hard drives and the 9700m 256 can play any game out thier and you can't beat pc torque get your laptop in three to four days.I think the XPS is a good computer but its a dell and you know how dell is.just like alienware all they want is your money pc torque is a small company and thier are more of a gaming company they don't use any tricks.I would buy from pc torque no matter what laptop you get.I don't trust dell or alienware and btw I have a area 51m.

Eurocom has had that same "advertisement" up for months.

vinnie, all that about the 8790 is true, but the fact is that you can just install all your programs and whatnot on the main drive and keep your other stuff on an external drive (besides, raid-ing in a lappy ain't the smartest idea ever due to the fact that both drives must be in perfect working condition/not subject to any random damage otherwise all your data goes el-kapooie) and buy small, external USB tv tuners, webcams, card readers, etc. to make up for that. also, the dell will usually cost significantly less if you apply dell's coupons to it (i.e. 10-25% off, $ off, rebates, free gifts, etc.) and still have the same, usually higher-priced config. If it weren't for the mr9800 i would simply say f*ck dell, but in this case i'll make an exception. besides, i doubt that most people here buy lappys for the extra perks they offer over a different, better performing model (unless they can get a damn good deal on it ) because let's face it, in the long run performance is just about everything, right? at least for me it is...

Thanks for the inputs!!! Well what is X600, M12, M18?

Thanks for the helpful inputs, I'll probably wait for the new Sager laptops. It would be like placing bet on odd numbers while the roulette comes out with even numbers-depressing to say the least. I know that X600, M12, M18 are graphic cards, but what are they? Which one is the fastest or anything new to be released soon? I need to get it before November, cause thats when my parents ask me what I want for Christmas hehehe. Happy gaming guys, and stop tweaking/benchmarking, start playing.
Thanks,
John
