HP nc6000 fan noise problem

Thread Starter
Hi, I just received my new HP nc6000 laptop and have been using it for a couple days. I have a question about the fan noise. There seems to be 3 speeds for the fan. Whisper Quiet low, kind of noisy medium, and blow dryer loud. If I'm not using it or just web browsing the fan runs at the slowest and quietest speed. But it frequently speeds up to the next speed when I'm working with programs like Outlook or Excel. The medium speed of the fan seems quite noise to me. Plus it jumps from low to medium speed constantly which is a little annoying. I could see if it stayed in the medium speed for a while then went back down. But it goes up and down and up and down within seconds. I guess what I want to know is if this is common or do I have a defective laptop. Any help would be great.

config:
1.8mhz Dothan
1GB (333 MHz) DDR SDRAM
40GB 5400rpm 8mb HD
14" SXGA+
Intel WiFi B&G

Thanks

You may have a defective unit. My NC6000 doesn't do what your laptop seems to be doing. My laptop is relatively quiet. The only time it's noisy is when I'm playing games.

My nc8000 does exactly the same. Gave HP a phone call, they tried on a nc8000 they had and decided the issue was "normal". Use Speedswitch (Google search for it) in order to lower the volume of the fan; it will stay at low speed all the time (but will stay on).

This stupid fan is one of the worst misconceptions of the computer. Why the hell the fan comes in when the CPU's temp is at 41°C?

I have an nc6000 and I'm not having that problem either. Convince them somthing is wrong (break... I mean fix, the fan), and have them fix it. My is only semi loud when playing games (but it is also only 1.4 GHz). Do you have a 2.0 Ghz dothan?

I don't know Krague17 is reading the forum anymore. peoples_flip just bumped a 3-month old topic up.

Set the Energy Options in Windows to "mobile"... that should do it
