"Max battery" vs. "Laptop / portable" power settings

Hi - which settings should I use on my notebook? I have a 1.7 Pentium M (Dothan) 1 gig ram, AT 9700. Other than the monitor settings, hibernating, etc I'm not sure what the difference is in the settings. Thanks.

Max battery is always trying to save power even when plugged in. Not necessary when plugged in but better for on battery.
As for Portable/Laptop, this setting trys to preserve battery when not plugged in, almost like max battery, but when plugged in it speeds up the processor when it's needed.
Hope that helps.
