OK, I got my laptop in april of '03, tonight it died! It will boot and beep so it is not the cpu or the mobo, but i believe the video card. There was a horrible electrical burning smell... i get a slight backlight but no picture. Any ideas? Is it dust? Can I sell it?

OK, it is definately the video card. I can log into windows blindly, all i get is a faint backlight on the screen like when the machine is first booting. Any way to get a new mobo?

I see the backlight, but that is all I see. You think it could be the backlight and not the video card? How do I check such a thing?

I would try hooking it up to an external monator that help you out when deciting wether or not the Vid card is out. if thats out then it is your vid card but if not its the LCD

I did that, nothing all I got was to hear the laptop making a clicking sound when the monitor was plugged in...

Well if your warranty is already up, then it shouldnt hurt trying this. I had this same problem with my 5660 like a month after I got it. If the screen is backlit and the laptop is loading (Which mine was doing) then all I did was take apart the screen (take off the rubber blockers on the screws, take unscrew, then use a plastic wedge to pull the layers apart). At the bottom you will see a pink and white connector below the screen, mine had come loose, so i just pushed the connector back together again and poof it came back on.

Hope this helps, its a pretty easy fix if this is the problem, but like the others said, it might be something else.

You rock! That is not my problem, but your response let to further investigation! The cable from the back of the LCD to the mobo fried... I noticed that around the left hinge by the display, it was burnt! I took the whole machine apart, I mean mobo out, display out and off of the back cover. Hopefully I can just get a new cable and that I can get her back together! Will let you all know the outcome, hopefully Monday I can drive down to Sager and get a replacement.

It is fixed! It was the LCD cable, had to take the machine almost completely apart to do it, but it works, good as new!
