Maybe I shoulda been clearer about his idea being a bit... silly. As he also suggests never deleting anything, and due to the various scratch disk stuff, its impossible.

His studies only involved comparing non deragged partitions to using that windows version, which as has been noted previousto this post, can be kinda "sucky".

I just dont defrag. Wierd, I guess. Lots of other ways to tune up the system though, I havent seen the need. I talk to people who insist on defraggin weekly, I think that is absurd. Annually, maybe. Color me odd.

another vote for diskkeeper. i tried a few and like this one the most. how often you defrag depends on how you're using your disks. if you max out your hard disks (which you shouldn't do) and work with large files, you'll probably want to defragment often. if you are using less than half of your hard drive and you only use your laptop for web surfing, you probably won't need to defrag ever.

That is the exact same thing I did for my system. On the 160GB drive, I had split it 3 way.

40GB for Windows, 20GB for crap / temp files / page-file, 100GB for data.

Hint: Partition Magic is your friend

Once ever 6 months, I'll just format the primary where windows was installed and use Norton Ghost to restore the original setup. WOrks great!

I haven't used defrag in over 2 years heheh

With Win2k, I defraged very often.
