XP SP2 and AOL

post #1 of 6

Ok, I just updated a family desktop to XP SP2 and now when it starts, a few seconds after booting it blue screens with a driver error with something to the effect of "driver unloaded without cancelling pending operations" with a driver atwpkt2.sys I go into safe mode and uninstall AOL and the computer works perfectly fine. But as soon as I install AOL and start it up, it crashes with the same error. I sent an e-mail to AOL but I have a feeling they're going to be useless so I decided to give it a shot here as well. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

As I should have expected, AOL blames it on Microsoft and offered absolutely no help. Big surprise. Well, can anyone here offer some advice? Thanks.

It might be DEP (Data Excecution Prevention), which is designed to stop certain virus/worm attacks, stopping the driver from doing its job. Try disabling DEP for the driver. If it has a Althon 64 CPU this is more likely to happen (it supports hardware DEP), but it still could happen in non-AMD systems since Windows uses a little software DEP.

Start up in Safe Mode.

Start->Control Panel->System

Click on the Advanced tab and then the settings button under Performance and click on the Data Excecution Prevention Tab and change the setting to "Turn on DEP for all Programs and Services except those I select" and then add the driver that fails to the exception list.

If that doesn't work, then I don't know what the problem is.

If the above method doesn't work you may have to hold off installing SP2. I haven't installed it yet and don't plan on doing it for about 6 months.
