I guess green is better than silver but blue is the way to go

Green was always my choice for my first Alienware, I don't think there was any way anyone was going to change that.

Antran 7,

I ran the benchmark Although I am using version 8.0 which is the newest new, but I got a score of 19.25 in the proe-03. Is this a good score although even if it isn't I see the hug jump in performance is Maya.

Jose I ran 3DMark 03 and got a score of 2862. I know this number is a lot lower with having a 3D production card in the machine but I think it's not that bad considering its not really meant for video games. Also I downloaded SPECviewperf 8.0 to test the card out with what its meant to do and I'm not sure if my score is that good. Any help in this area would be great.
what kind of specperf help do you need? what score(s) did you get with specperf? it's got all sorts of tests to emulate Pro/Engineer, Solidworks, Maya, etc... You can run them all, or just run indivudal emulators.

I'm most interested in the Pro/Engineer score, since that's my primary application

Chris, thanks for the info. I was curious how it compared to the 5700 for gaming apps. And you're right, considering it isn't made for games the score is pretty good.
hey chris, nice laptop

What do u use this laptop for? Cos im hesitating between an Area 51-m or MJ-12. I use photoshop CS, macromedia flash and some video editing programs like AFter Effect 5.5. From time to time i play strategy games. Can u give me some feedback on the speed difference and the working difference if compared to a normal PC when working on graphics? It would really help me out cos i have NO idea of how the performance will change.

Thanks
ldjalal none of the programs you listed would benifit from using a Quadro FX. Quadro's are for OPGL development ... such as 3D Studio Max.. stuff like that.
Ok, then should i go with the normal 9700 or 5700?
I ordered my 51m with a Geforce FX 5700 for Linux compatibility, if I wasn’t running Linux I would have chosen the Radeon 9700.
I wont be working with Linux so ill guess ill go with 9700. Thanks, cos i had no idea in the performance difference when working with graphics. now i know that its kinda useless to get the mj-12 or the roswell.

Nexor's right Idjalal, if I were you I would go with the one of the gaming cards Photoshop and After Effects will have no problem on one of those cards and plus you'll be happier with games performance. As a side note I installed City of Heroes and it looked and ran fine, I'm also going to install UT2004 to really test the gaming of it, but I'm doing it just to see how it plays and not really going to be it's primary focus but I will probably leave one or two games on it to have fun every once and a while.

Antran,
I managed to finds the scores of other computers on their website, which by the way it beat Dell's M60, but with only 128mb of video ram, desktops with 256 mbs or video ram beat it out. Also here's what the computer got in the Proe-03 test.

proe-03 Weighted Geometric Mean = 19.25
I ran them all so just tell me if you want the other ones.
The Dell M60 scored 14.89 in proe 03.
(with Quadro FX Go1000)

testing with passmark

Hi Chris,
Would it be possible to ask you to test your machine with passmark's performanceTest - http://www.passmark.com/ - and post the results here?
I'm thinking of getting a Roswell-m myself, and have done benchmarking of both Dell XPS and IBM G40 with it (my other two options)...
Thanks a lot!

Arrival
The system came in the usual packing, was also accompanied by a small box which had my wireless card and the dc power converter for the car. Was amazed by the amount of papers and cds you get with Alienware systems. First boot up was no problem put all my info in. Put in the wireless card and boom I was on the internet with no problem at all. The amount of paperwork you receive with an Alienware computer is amazing you get a detailed sheet of your specs and every single driver and driver version that was installed on your computer.

Pros
-The construction of Alienware laptops are the best I have ever seen. In my opinion theses laptops are the best constructed laptops on the market.
-The keyboard has no flex at all, its very firm like a normal keyboard
-The screen is unbelievable the picture is great, playing DVDs looks very nice on the widescreen displays
-The sound and speakers are great I left the basic sound card that they give you because I didn’t want to hook up any external cards to the machine; the 3D sound is great with these speakers. The speakers are really loud which surprised me I didn’t think they would be that loud.

3D programs
-Huge difference of performance in Maya compared to my desktop system with an AMD Barton, 1 gig of dual DDR and a Radeon 9800 Pro, which is my gaming machine
-SPEC ViewPerf 8.0 tests beat Dell’s M60 but were still lower then normal desktop workstations probably due to the fact of video memory
-3D Mark score was 2862 which isn’t great but this is a production video card not a gaming card but games still run great, check game section for details.

Games
-UT2004, ran the game in 1680 x 1050 in its native resolution and the game looks and runs great with option on normal not high and no lag with 11 other bots in an onslaught match
-City of Heroes, game runs good in 1680 x 1050, there is a little lag here and there but nothing that would disturb your gameplay.
-Overall had no problems had playing games considering this is a Quadro card and not a 9700

Battery Life
-Watched Kill Bill for exactly one hour, with the wireless card in and was 45% batter power left. Which is not too bad considered all the power that was being used.
-Also I noticed the LCD doesn’t dim on battery power which I thought most laptops did but this one doesn’t which is cool but it definitely added to the drain.

Heat
-Machine without cooling gets warm and runs at about 65 degrees celcius and about the same using Maya for a little bit but with the Antec cooling pad it drops the temp. about 5 degress.

P.S.
I used the Nvidia display options to find out temp.

Problems
-My lan card itself was having trouble with the drivers not being loaded properly even though the drivers were present, after half an hour or so I uninstalled the drivers restarted the machine and when it restarted it detected the card and then worked fine, wasn’t a big deal but will probably let Alienware know.

Overall Assessment
Alienware in my opinion is one the best PC manufactures out there, like any other company we all have had our problems with them at one point or another, but in the end when the machine gets delivered to you, you relize what kind of quality computer you just bought. Out of any computer I have ever owned up to this point Alienware is the best computers I’ve ever owned that I bought from a company. The only problem I had with Alienware was the wait for the Quadros coming in, which in way wasn’t their fault. Also I think that this computer will probably not stop amazing with its power and usability overall as a laptop.

Think I covered the major topics if anyone has any questions just post them or PM and I will be glad to answer them seeing as I am the only one with the Quadro card so far in this fourm or the internet for that matter.

Chris,
Thanks for the great info. Now I've got a case for the AW, since it's 29% faster in ProE, and probably similar or more increase in speed for Maya (my primary apps).

The only problem now is the long wait to get it. I can understand that, as a gamer, i might wait months for a machine, but a business can't wait that long. i've got a max of three weeks when i will need it (more like two).

Do you think AW will work out a deal to get an expedited order?

I'm downloading viewperf 8.0 right now. we'll see how it runs on a dell precision 360, 2GB RAM, Quadro 3000, 2.8Ghz P4.
