AMD64 3200+ Uniwill258kA0 last try!!! - Page 2

That does sound troubling. I assume that is an Ibuypower system? Have you tried contacting them?
It sounds like the CPU is overheating and hence dropping speeds.... how hot is the exhaust fan?

What are you doing when it drops down? Are you using a program that is a resource hog or just surfing the web? When you play a newer game does it run slower than expected, because if not everything should be working ok. If you are checking it when there is no need for the cpu to be running all out then it won't show you the full 2gig.

Even with it set to Desktop/Home power setting it will still scale back to 800mhz because of PowerNow, but only when the full 2gig isn't needed. Portable/Laptop puts a speed cap on the cpu at 800mhz.

So if you are getting it to run at 2gig I'd say its working the way it should be, and only be worried if everything starts slowing down while running programs.

I agree with Rustican, don't download drivers unless you have to, but I downloaded all of the ones (that pertained to laptops) offered on the AMD website, including the CPUID/CPUZ. They should show the max it is capable of running and if it says about 2gigs then don't worry and enjoy the notebook.

I'm thinking that Sp2 might be causing this problem, because ever since I installed it, I have been having some throttleing issues as well, I might try reinstalling soon and trying then.
try reinstalling the drivers after to install SP2, I think it is replacing a file or something, mine was stuck at 800 Mhz regardless of what I did, then I uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled, and now it is working correctly

Flyby, the way it works when set on "Portable/laptop" is that it idles at 800mhz and then throttles up higher (all the way up to 2ghz if needed) when you need the power. When set to "Always on" it is supposed to stay at 2ghz. I plug it in, and set it to always on, and it WILL stay at 2ghz for random periods of time(1min to 20mins) but then it will drop down. It drops down no matter what im doing, ill have it running Doom3 at 2ghz and then all of a sudden drop down to 800mhz for no reason. I can tell its doing this because I have Mobile Meter running in the back, and when I close doom3 I can see when it stopped running at 2ghz. I'm very sure it should NOT be doing this, as it makes gaming hard when I go from 30-60fps down to 10fps because of the CPU.

Tonight when I get home from school i'm going to try reinstalling XP and SP2, if its not working then ill try the newest AMD drivers, and if it still isnt working i'll return it and buy a Mayem G3 from ABS. The G3 is the same base Uniwill 258ka0, but they will actually send you pc-3200ram (unlike IBP who ****ed up my order) and seem like a more reliable company. The Dip****s at IBP knew FAR less than me about alot of stuff on the phone, and my knowledge is just from browsing these forums and the AMD site for a day or two.

I know how you feel Struzor. I think every tech for these companies should have this forum as a mandatory reading. But the way PowerNow works is not how you think. On Portable/Laptop it will not throttle up to 2gigs because the whole point is to save the battery life and at 2gigs it won't last long at all, not that it does at 800mhz. PowerNow is dynamic and throttles the cpu as needed, ie its supposed to run at 2.0gigs for a 3200+ when needed like for playing Doom3, but as soon as you no longer need it the cpu throttles down accordingly. It should not throttle down while playing though.

I only have Far Cry loaded for right now and I can tell you the cpu stays at 2.2gigs (3400+) but as soon as I exit out of it PowerNow slows down to less. If I tried playing Far Cry on my G3 set to Portable/Laptop I would be lucky to get 10-20fps. I can't say what it is like playing Doom3 though because I don't have it, but maybe it is slowing down and the cpu is still running at 2gigs, it is the most intensive game out there right now.

As a test you can see the difference in speed between the Home/Desktop and Battery/Laptop setting in just by opening the show hidden icons arrow on the taskbar. I know this sounds stupid but there is a deffinite speed difference when it slides open to show all of the icons. Test it out you'll see.

If it is still throttling down while you are playing then send it back. ABS prices have gone down and they are starting to offer the 3700+ as well, which I wish I could have waited for. I haven't seen the uniwill with the PC2700 so I can't comment on performance differences between the two, I just know mine is fast as hell and I am very happy with it, as you should be.

Well, I know for a fact that it goes up to 2ghz while set to Portable/Laptop, as I was watching it do it. It sits at 800mhz MOST of the time but when opening up apps and stuff, it moves up to 2ghz and then drops back down. If set to Home/Office desk or Always on, it wont move up or down at all, it just sits at 2ghz for awhile, then drops to 1.6 or 800, it most noticably drops down to 800mhz when set to Always on when I run 3dmark03, as im getting scores of 300cpu marks when 2800+'s are getting scores in the 600's.

If you go over and look at the AMD forums you'll see that dozens of people have the same issue with their e-machines - once the processor drops to 800Mhz it doesn't go back up again. I'm not sure what the status of all that is currently but I believe it ended up being somethingto do with PowerNow drivers for XP, though it would pay to check the site - http://forums.amd.com Mobile Forum.

Well, reformated and installed everything 1 thing at a time, testing at each stage, and it's still doing it. Drops to 1.6 or 800 randomly while running 3dmark03 even though it's set on "Always on." Guess im returning it...

None of those things helped me, as you can see by reading those threads, it is also not working for many of those people.

I didn't go through each of the posted links two comments back but found the following: http://www.whatlaptop.co.uk/topic.as...67&whichpage=2

Supposedly half way down that thread is a solution. I don't have mine yet so can't test or confirm.

i am in the same pile of **** as Struzor there.....looking for a fix.

ABF, my BIOS and System have NEVER displayed anything but 798mhz. Thats not the problem, the fact that it wont stay at 2ghz when running games is the problem. I think i'll be going with Gamepc.com or ABS to try their version and get better ram, or maybe a Dell 9100 with a 256mb 9800, or maybe a different company, who knows.
The point of all those threads wasn't to give you a fix, but to point out that it's an issue with the CPU, not with whatever mahcine you happen to be running. Try thinking about this logically for a second & realise that there's every chance that a GamePC or ABS machine will have exactly the same problem - and if it doesn't, it's certainly not any hardware difference - so maybe start by downloading ABS or GamePC's bios and/or drivers & see whether you can make any progress.

I had the exact problem you are referring to, but I solved it easily. First I downloaded the CPUID software from AMD and the AMD 64 XP Drivers. Then I went to device manager-processors- and uninstalled drivers. When it asked me to restart I said no both times, and then installed the AMD 64 drivers I had downloaded. I rebooted and when i got into XP I ran the PowerNow dashboard, and it seemed the same, until I ran a game, and it quickly moved to 100%. If you run CPUID it'll go to 100% as well. I seriously doubt this is a processor problem at all, this is simply a screwed up Windows XP driver. Hope this helps. My laptop specs are:
Batallion 101-S AMD 64 3200+, 1 GB Kingston DDR RAM, 60 GB 7200 RPM HD, 128 MB Ati Radeon 9700 Pro, DVD/RW drive, Intel Pro Wireless 802.11 a/b/g
Running Windows XP Professional- Service Pack 2
