Which Linux?

Hey guys, I'm interested in installing Linux on a spare computer just to test it out. But when I went to get the software, I discovered that there are many types of Linux. So I need your help in deciding which is the best version of Linux and why. Thanks guys.

if you want to just start out and you know zero about *nix, knoppix is a good place to start, doesn't require any data loss on your system, boots straight from a cd, and has the best hardware detection, i used that first on a computer to make sure it COULD accept linux, and it did, now i've been fighting with that system to get it to work properly for about two weeks now on debian, i finally gave up and packed the computer up to move back to college where i will fight with it more, good luck

edit: by the way, if you just search the internet for things like "which linux distro" (or distribution, either should produce results), there are probably dozens of articles explaining what's best, also, i know that techtv (g4tv or whatever they changed it to, i haven't had it for years since comcast pulled it from their lineup ) used to have a superguide on linux which is relatively helpful, also www.justlinux.com, and www.tldp.org are good sites

Mandrake is probably the most "new to Linux" friendly distro. Red Hat is the most commonly used. I like SuSE and Slackware.

Gentoo it think is one of the best learning distros. If you wanna learn linux definately try this one or slackware. Gentoo and slackware are great because you need to use the termal more then you do with other distros.

i am actually running suse right now, but mandrake is pretty nice too. some distros work better than others on sertain systems. at one time i had redhat installed and i would get no sound (i have creative sound blaster live card), same issue with mandrake, gentoo wouldn't do anything for my video card (intel 810) so i tried Suse 9.1 Personal and it is working great...i have everything...sound, cd burning, my printer works (hp deskjet) and the video is fine (and as a bonus it supports 16:10 format (something that is usefull to those with WXGA screens).
