*warning...warning* Xp Sp2

I have a 8790, I guess I didn't see the warnings in time about the Service Pack 2 for XP. I TELL YOU STAY AWAY FROM IT. I had to wipe my HD clean, wouldn't boot from anything or anywhere. It was a $2700 fan at this point. So now I'm loading all my OS/drivers and everything else over again. Download at own risk!!

That sux. However, not all of us have had bad experiences with SP2. Mine has been smooth.

I'm gonna stay away from sp2 until I know for sure I won't have problems.

It has been working flawlessly on my 5620 since release or so. I am not sure what it depends on but it might be specific software incompatibilities since hardware should be the same across the sager series.

I installed SP2 on two desktops and one laptop. I had a problem with my friends desktop after installing this morning (through the windows update). Upon attempting to log on I would get the bsod with "beginning physical memory dump" due to idechndr.sys DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. I went to a system restore before I installed SP2 and then the computer would just give a black screen after Bios. Then I attempted safe mode, which only worked about 10% of the time and It would still crash in safe mode. Finally after googleing I foud out it was a possible memory leak due to SP2's IDE drivers and some motherboard so I rolled back all IDE drivers to microsoft versions, not intels. Now the computer seems to be working but I cannot tell if the problem is fixed permanintly and have told him not to update for the next couple of months. I will no longer recommend to my friends that they install SP2, as I do not want to be responsible for what happens. I like knowing that i'm completely up to date and Luckily it is working on my desktop. So far I have no complaints about SP2 WHEN IT INSTALLS CORRECTLY!

Good luck getting the problem worked out.

I've had no problems with sp2 at all.

No problems here either on my Hypersonic GX8.

My 5690 boots faster and I've had no problems so far.
It took 32 hours to download and install on a CD-ROM
but everything seems to be working great.

only update to sp2 if you have a legit key

What CPU do you have? Northwood? Prescott? Seems to be prevalent problems w/ the Prescotts judging from a few reports here on the boards.

Thanks all, with your wealth of knowledge. But I'm up and running again with NO SP2! I was freakin out for a short time, I'm leaving in 2 weeks for Afganastan and Microsoft wants to give me a heart attack. But all is well again! I'm glad for all of you that didn't encounter what I did, It sucked!

no problems here either

Fellas, most of your problems were stated in the issues pages @ Microsoft. They have a whole list of apps that dont work well, etc. For example, StyleXP 1 doesnt work with SP2. Also, Zonealarm is a no-go.

Having taken some precautions (eg I uninstalled Norton Systemworks before doing the upgrade), my system is fine and dandy after the SP2 upgrade.
