Argh! Acer make me so p*s*ed.

I want an Acer notebook with 64mb Radeon 9700, Dothan and a DVD Writer.

BUT I DON'T WANT A FRICKEN WIDESCREEN!

I still like to play my oldschool 2d games and Widescreen does not facilitate that as far as I know.

Acer offers systems with a 15" monitor, radeon 9700 and dothan cpu but as soon as you want a DVD writer... you have to buy a damn widescreen.

ARGH!

Acer Travelmate 8005 LMI has got all those and a normal-aspect 15" SXGA+ screen. It's pretty pricey though, for an Acer.

Why not just deal with the blackbars on your games?

Well, if you can deal with a 128MB card you should have more options, although I stopped keeping up with Acer's after I bought mine. Because I *didn't* want a 64MB card I had to pass by a lot of them, I do remember that. Why Acer specifically?

Sure, why not? It will perform as a common 4:3 screen... I think he thinks that the games would be stretched, as I thought the same some time ago...

Im not a big fan of the lack of height in the widescreen monitor.

As regards to the "why Acer, specifically" question, I cant seem to find anyone else who offers 9700 gpu systems in the same price range.

There are a lot of alternatives, most of them obscure or brandless that are just fine anyway. I bought Acer because in Finland there were no cheaper alternatives at the time, and I didn't want to order from abroad (I'd rather be able to pick it up, after shipping there'd be no difference in price). In the UK they seem to have no end of alternatives... What's your price range, then?

I am moving to the UK next month and will be purchasing the notebook there. My price range is anywhere from 700 - 1100 GBP.

Any suggestions.

Any suggestions of more generic brands? I'm not sure where to start looking.
