DVD write error... Sager problem?

So I have had this happen on and off, when I am burning a DVD sometimes I get an error message:

Write operation was not sucessful. Communiation failure in DVD recorder. Driver error code = 02040801h. the disc was not successfully recorded.

THen when I hit okay to that one the error pops up saying this:
SCSI communication failure detected by drive.

Any idea what might be causing this? I have the 2X DVD burner in my 8790. It only happens once in a while, but it is getting really annoying. Time for a RMA?

Thanks,
Sean

Sean,

What media are you using for the recording? Is it certified for the device. DVDs are a bit picky.

I recreated this condition today using the 4x drive and some "Sucky" media. I was copying ISO file using Nero and go the same thing. Not always - just when the DCD was subpar (most of them were).

I use Ritek -R 4X media (burning at 2X), which I thought was some of the best media you can buy... What brand do you use Gomaha?

I was losing 50-70% of all burns on my Sager 4X until I upgraded to the newest version of Nero (6.3.1.20 I think). Now I only lose 1 in 10 or so . The burner simply isn't the highest quality burner available. I've got an NEC 3500a in a USB enclosure that has yet to make a coaster even with the cheap media.

I generally use Ritek or Ridata; however, I did buy 100 DVD-R's from Merit Line that really Sucked - Those are the ones that I failed on. Odd, I've had good luck with the Ritek and Ridata.
