Fight Acer 2012WLMi vs. Asus M6BNe

Thread Starter
I've decided to buy one of these two notebooks:
Acer 2012WLMi vs. Asus M6BNe

I'm tending to go for the acer( because of nearly the same parameters and price $250 off)
but it seems like the school is starting and the Acer is nowhere to get for a price around $1350 and below. It's a too big diference and i think the asus isn't worth that much diference.(cost 1550$ and up, with a similar configuration, except for the 4200rpm drive.)

Do you guys now some good place where to find the Acer right now?
Thanks.

One that I have heard of still having the 2012wlmi in stock is www.cdw.com
But with the speed this lappy is leaving us I wouldn't be surprised if they have sold it out too. Go and see, you can even call them.

EDIT: just checked cdw.com - they are out of the 2012wlmi but still have the 2012wlci for 1300. If money is not such a big issue I would recommend going with that 1500-1550 config of the Asus cause 1300 is a bit high for the 2012wlci, IMO.

ASUS is actually much cheaper than the Acer if you build it yourself.

Building from barebone is much more expensive than some people might think. Usually, when you build something by yourself you save a ton of money but with notebooks this is not the case.
If he builds the Asus from barebone it will come 100-150 bucks (and this is not counting the availability of OS) cheaper than buying the same Asus config from DiscountLaptops or Powernotebooks. But this comes at the expense of not having warrenty and also not many people have the experience of building laptops from barebone. There is always a certain risk, even for people who have done this before, to damage some component.
Usually, the reason to build from barebone has to do with making sure that you have all the "special" components you might want like AS5, for example, that are not always offered by on-line vendors. However, in the end the dif in price is pretty small and deprives you of warrenty.
In other words, don't expect to save a ton of money buy building from barebone.

Well zlatanov has one of the main points correct. If you want a system with exact specs, you have to build yourself.

However, it's also not entirely true that the price is only slightly lower; neither is the statement that there are no warranties available.

I have warranty for the barebones chassis from my reseller -- same as any warranty for prebuilt systems (ASUS does not service the warranty themselves)

My setup cost me $1640, which includes the $120 3-year warranty

1.5Ghz Dothan
1GB Kingmax RAM
60GB Toshiba 5400rpm w/16mb cache
Xterasys XG600 802.11b/g minipci
Extra Optical bay battery

A similar configuration costs $2000 prebuilt

that's $360 saved, some of which I used to get accessories (mouse, external 8x dvd burner) and the left over $280 goes back into my wallet (or rather credit card limit)

Something to think about

At DiscoutnLaptops:
Asus M6Ne (ChemBook 2060E)
15.1 SXGA
1.5 Dothan
60GB 5400 HD
1GB RAM
second optical bay battery
IntelPro 2200 built in wireless
3 year warrenty
Total: 1800 cash price or 1840 CC charge.

It is not that much of a difference, especially when someone doesn't know how to build from barebone. As for the warrenty it covers only the casing and not all components. Is something goes wrong with any of those you installed, the 3-year warrenty desn't cover them and you will have to go with their manufacturer's warrenty for which after a year or so I am not sure could be trusted.

EDIT: Of course this is doesn't include all the risks an inexperienced person takes by going with building from barebone.

Go Asus, their customer service is great. Acer's is terrrible. Asus gave my wife a new notebook, no questions asked, for a minor screen problem that 99.9% of people couldn't notice within hours. I had to wait a week, see two promised deadlines pass, get two incorrect diagnoses, and get raped on accessories to get a new 3200. There is a great chance my next lappy will be from Asus obviously.
