HP Pavilion Wont Power On

Thread Starter
Hi, My Pavilion ze4400 laptop quit suddenly and now it won't power on. When plugged into the ac power the hard drive indicator light comes on. That's the only light to come on. Pressing the power on button does not do anything. Except for the HD light the machine appears dead. I have removed the cmos battery overnight and then replaced it with no change to the problem. When I unplug the ac power the HD light goes out after about 2 seconds, acting more like the power indicator light would normally do. Even putting the battery pack in does the same thing; drive light is on without pressing the power on button or anything else.
I don't have a floppy drive to try and force boot from, and HP doesnt give out their machine type specific boot disk utility even if I did. The HP service centers here in Edmonton, Canada only do basic repairs and just said the usual "replace the motherboard" same as HP support said. Thats a $580 option plus shipping and no quarantee it will fix it.
Does this sound like a bios or power supply problem?
Thanks for yor time.

Have you checked the reset button on the bottom of your machine?

DONT SEND IT.. I'll look at it free.. trust me they'd rather sell you a new base. www.ikenfixit.com (Could be a number of things, But Thermal/CPU/Shorted component would be a drive through guess)..www.ikenfixit.com

I am having similar issues with my ze4102, except the orange AC light is on...well, sporadically. Here is my post from yesterday:

http://notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=46360

I removed the CMOS battery last night, it tested @ 3.3V (3V battery) so I reinstalled everything and cleaned a little stickiness off some of the components...might have had a soda spill in the past, but nothing recently.
Every now and then, if I push the power button the blue keyboard and on/off lights come on...but that's it; don't hear any HD or fan spinning.
Maybe we have the same issue? Good luck.

It probably is the motherboard or rather something integrated into the motherboard. Thats the problem with notebooks.. its all integrated. It could be the bios, but more likely the power module attached to the m/b. There's no reason you should be paying 580 bucks for a new m/b.. check LaptopParts.com or search google. Buy from a third party vendor and install yourself. Good luck...

I'm having a similar problem. I dropped my ze 4400 and the power cord won't give a good connection. It was working if i jiggled it a little, but now its no go. I need some instructions on opening the case so I can replace the mother board or fix the power input plug.
