Battery Life

I know a lot has been said about this, but no one has ever covered this topic - how long will a 5670 last if I'm only using MS Word? Every other topic just says how long it lasts playing a DVD, but I would imagine that takes a lot more power than just taking notes in class(which is basically all I would ever need to use batteries for).

Sorry for beating a dead horse, but no one has ever really fleshed out this aspect of battery life. Thanks in advance for your reply.

You'll probably get close to two hours with two batteries.

two as in dual, or as in running one dead, and then putting hte second one in, and running that dead?

Man! This is making it so hard for me to decide what to do! I don't know whether or not this thing is going to be able to last for me through my classes at college, and if it doesn't, I'm screwed, and wasted a lot of money! Ahhhhhh!

From my perspective

I think 1 battery will give u close to 2 hours when u use microsoft windows, and dual battery setup which is 2 battery, will give you close to 3 hours

Think of it this way, 1 battery is 1 and a half hour.

This is purely based on research and looking at forums, im expecting 5670 to arrive at my house by next week
and then i could try its true power.

I was refering to the dual battery setup for the 5670.

But if one battery gives you 2 hours, and dual batteries give you three...why wouldn't you use one battery until it's depleted, and then strap in the other one.

dual battery

If you drained one battery and then swapped you would need to shut down your computer in between. The dual battery setup allows you to go the entire length of time without shutting down. I should also point out that you could buy additional batteries (for example 3-4) and shut down and swap between each one, giving you long battery life. The problem is this is very expensive, batteries run about $100 each, and you need to whip out a screwdriver to change the battery (except the secondary battery, which is quick release) But it is possible.

Ohhhh, ok. Thanks for telling me it's only because you have to shut down. I don't really mind that, so I'll go with swapping batteries. But I thought the whole unscrewing thing was just in the 8887, not in the 5670...?

the 5670 has no screw in its primary battery, its just a latch.

i'm timing the dual battery setup right now, i'm going to be on lowest brightness setting on the screen, have microsoft word xp open, browsing the internet on one browser window using my wireless network, speakers are off (volume is all the way down), and not using cd drive, i'll let you know how long it goes.

This laptop hasnt been "conditioned" to run longer yet, except for the lowered screen brightness and the 50% cpu throttle I havnt done anything else that could really increase battery life.

If anyone could enlighten me on other ways to increase battery life while I'm running this test feel free to enlighten me.

Thanks man!

Hi,

One thing you might want to consider is to use one of those USB flash memory drives for the files you are editing. If you can keep the hard disk from spinning up that will improve your battery life. Also consider using the custom power settings in the System Configuration Utility. I don't have a 5670, but the 8887 has an option to spin down the disks after 5 seconds of no activity.

That's not going to give you four hours. I don't remember the exact numbers, the main battery is much bigger than the bay battery, something like 4000mAh versus 3000. The bay battery will only extend the time, not give you an entire extra battery length.

but when you buy a spare, isn't that just a regular battery, not a bay battery?
Yeah, if you buy a spare, then it's just another main battery. That one probably does have a screw, I don't really know about the 5670. However, it is inconvienient since you'd have to carry an extra battery around, you'd have to shut down your computer to put it in, and there's no way to charge it outside the computer. It's essentially good only for like a LONG haul, perhaps an airplane flight.
