Hi im going to purchase a laptop in november or so

my price range is about $1700 with some wiggle room

just wondering what are the best laptops to look at around that range
post #2 of 22
Hey you gotta be more specific than this.

Well for your price range check out velocitymicro . com. They have a student edition notebook that was rated PC Editors choice from pc mag. The only problem was the wifi was a little crappy.

The noteBook is called NoteMagix B50 Campus Edition, its a cl-56.
They don't charge Tax and you can add to the base price if wanted.

Hope this helps,
James

I was thinking either centrino or athlon64 what graphics options will be availble with these when it comes to november?? what is the battery life of the athlon like?? just looking for the best advice and who to buy off before i purchase. I do want to play games on it and will be using it for university
post #4 of 22
1) Centrino - Expect 4-5hrs battery life.
2) Athlon64 - Expect 1.5-2.5 on DTRs and 2.5-3.5 on LV (Low Voltage).
3) Not sure on the graphics. ATI MR9800 should be widely available by November, but only on DTR notebooks. Someone will fill you in on PCI-E, I haven't really been following that...

First response is right though, you need to be more specific. We know you want to game, but do you want optimal mobility (while still being able to game) or is it going to be a desk jockey and never taken anywhere?

What is exactly DTR? Is it Desk Top Replacement?
Also, does the AMD 64 bits is a mobile proc like PM? What about the battery life of the AMD comparate to the PM?

Thanks,

What are ppl's suggestions on an Athlon64 system? should i go for a slower hardrive with more space or does a faster drive make a big difference? i also presume the more ram i can get will make a big difference? will these two also have an affect on battery time being lower??

Jeebus! Blacko are you blind!

Generally no. However there is a more mobile version for longer battery life.

What do you want to do? The faster hard drive (7200) will have faster boot times and faster overall but only by a couple seconds. I would reccomend this unless you work heavily with multimedia that takes up a lot of space.

Not signifigantly. Don't worry about it.

Hope that helped .

Thanks does help quite a bit so now i think im looking for an athlon64 system with maximum amount of hard disk and ram i can afford
post #12 of 22
Sorry to say, but Athlon 64 systems are not numberous currently. The cheapest one you'll be able to get will be $1800 base price (Sager 4750). At this price you will get a small slow hard drive.

The maximum amount of RAM you need is either 512MB or 1GB. 512MB is idea, best bang for buck. Unless of course, you may get only 256MB and then upgrade it youself. You can do this with both the RAM and hard drive. Order the cheapest you can get when you buy the notebook, then get the best you can afford from Newegg or ZipZoomFly. THis is the better option for you. Then you can sell the original hard drive and RAM.

Anyways, the 4750 comes highly recommended. Check out the Sager General and Sager Reviews forums to learn more about it.

To get a good 4750 with what you want would come to $2000. The other notebook you can consider is the Acer Ferrari. Sorry, but no notebooks with Athlon64 and your requirements in you budget.

You don't HAVE to get an Athlon64. Centrino systems perform incredibly well... games like Far Cry and Doom 3 will run fine on them. So you may want to consider getting a different processor... unless you stuck on the 64 bit.

Come November, I bet Athlon64 systems will have increased dramatically and you will get a system you want for your price.

Phew that was long . Hope that helps.

I think emachines has Athlon 64 based systems for well below $1700. B Nietsnie is just plain wrong with his assertion that no A64 systems are available under 1800.

I think that HP and some other sellers have A64 systems as well. You also should check out cyberpowersystems and ibuypower. I know they have some A64 systems.

It's hard to beat eMachines for value and performance. Great machines.

ahh i presume in november there will be better graphics options? but will they be at a premium price?
By November you would probaly be able to get the quality of graphics cards that are on the mobile market right now for the current price. And if you get lucky there may be some PCIE notebooks for a decent price. If you can wait, wait. Especially with PCIE so close .

ahh being that its that close i belive i might wait till they are bit widespread any reviews of future systems out there? or is it case of wait and see

But by February, do you think tere will be the mobile 64 bits AMD proc with PCI E standars so we can upgrade the graphic card?

Thanks,
Blacko
