So I called dell today... - Page 2

Chances are you talked to a sales rep about the bios not a tech rep.

thought about that so I asked if it was the right place to call, they transed me to tech. I've been working in tele comm. customer service for a long time so I knew to ask. I ended up actually talking to 4 people, but the first person was very nice and new better then to even try to answer my question.

Here are the majority of 700+ more customers saying "OMG THEY SUCK"

I don't want to turn this is to another dell vs. the world battle thread, but I defended them for about 5 years and now is my time to continue stating what I feel, and it is no longer defending them. Plus I figured I paid my dues in being able to state my opinion.

As Ewolf said, the large majority of their issues are their support if you can live with that, it is not a terrible product.

first off, inspiron (i) = laptop ------ dimension (d) = desktop

about the resellerrattings....dell has over $40 billion in annual revenue and have been growing almost 20% each fiscal year. the projected annual revenue of fiscal 2007 is said to be around $63.1 billion. Dell is the global leader in the computer hardware industry. but hey, if you want to compare 700 opinions to the 30,000,000 who may disagree, go ahead.

just stating the facts. this is in no way a flame towards jay.

Jay, people usually speak up only to complain. If everything is fine, most won't go and say Hey guys, you did a great job.

Ah yes, you just reminded me, I keep forgetting to go there and rate my Dell...I like mine and have no regrets purchasing it 2 years ago. I like this one here http://www.resellerratings.com/seller3048.html

Alright, don't let the flames break out.

All i'm saying is that dell is a good system. In comparison lets call them cheverolet. A good vehicle right? I think so anyway, but a vehicle for the masses. Still reliable, but so huge that they have to have some lapses somewhere. No one is perfect. They do their best. Now alienware is ferrari. Powerful, fast, has some really high end stuff and some stuff that is comparable to chevy as well. They pay alot of attention to detail, so with this they have lower sales, they cost more and because so they have less lapses in cusotmer service and things like that. Obviously alot less then cost in comparison, but I think it works.

The main point is, is that while chevy might not always compare in performance. Let's face it a corvette zo6 will not compare to an ENZO. However, that doesn't mean that a chevy can't be run hard for a long time, just maybe not at the same level. Some people don't think the extra attention to detail is worth, lets face it aliens are expenive. Plus, some people don't have to call dell for help, but I will at some point have to call because I don't know everything about computers. When that happens, I wanna be able to call in and get someone that isn't watching the clock trying to leave. I want someone with there had securely and safely out of there ass and ready for my question, and I know I'm not going to get that from dell. My own experience and several others have shown that alot of their reps don't know ****. So, I chose the ferrari, maybe a 360 modena. Expensive, but for what I want it do and how I want service, well worth it for me. I'm glad you guys are happy with your dells, good for you! I willprobably see you someday online playing ut 2004 or something and you will be moving just as well as I and probably waste me because I suck, but I have my piece of mind of a cyborgreen area51m sitting in my lap that was built to my spec with great attention to detail and testing. By then I might have a better card in it too. I will be happy, so will you, so why in the hell does it matter?

I consider Dell a low cost solution when I'm in need of a DT. The only other viable choice would be a home built. Other brands like Gateway, HP/Compaq, Emachines, Sony, etc. I wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole.

All that I have to add is well put..... this pretty much sums up the whole Dell vs. Alienware issue in one post.

I think their size is a large reason they receive a large amount of complaints about their technical support, but that was their choice not to limit their client base. More is not always better. As far as resellerratings, this is a small portion of their customers but I disagree with the portion about only unhappy people going there, as evident by PcTorque and MoeyKFA's link. I think that is true of forums, but not reseller ratings. I think the more technically astute go there, which I am more likely to trust, because I feel they more on my level. I've owned and posted for both the dell and my Sager, because I feel I owed that much, since I used the service for a partial basis for my decision.

Again though, I in no way was saying "They suck" or "Don't buy from them", as I stateded earlier in the thread, I feel their technical support is lacking, but if you can look past this they have a decent product.

I want an alienware, and will order one when the graphics cards and ship dates arent MONTHS away...BUT, I still consider the XPS from time to time. Dell has MANY advantages over Alienware, MANY. The XPS is just as much power as a PCI express area 51...it's got the SAME options from the SAME companies for HUNDREDS (and when they throw that 20% coupon in) its sometimes near $1000 dollars cheaper than alienware for the SAME high end configuration....and the SAME 480 watt P/S...same P 4 3.6, same X800 XT, same 148 gig raptors, same everything except the case and the lights (now the XPS has a front panel fan that lights up like alienice).

The price comparison can sway rediculously in Dell's favor now that the XPS is in it's 3rd revision...not to mention Dell doesn't nickel and dime you over replacing parts (charging your credit card to send a WARRANTY replacement part), arguing with you over a cancellation, restocking fee's at 15%, lying about ship dates...charging your credit card WEEKS before your system is even begun to be built forget shipped...and so on.

I've said it once and I'll say it again, it's a COOL deal to have an alienware...they are AWESOME looking, NOT everyone has them (or can afford one) they are considered fast as all heck...its just a different more "fun" computer to buy...but to claim a loaded Dell XPS generation 3 is garbage are making themselves feel better about spending more on their alienware. Benchmark an XPS vs an Area 51 PCI express and prepare to go into credit card/wallet shock if you think your alienware is gonna blow it outta the water with the same exact components.
Commish,

I've got a PCIE A51 on the way...why don't you buy the XPS and we'll have a benchmark-showdown
post #33 of 40
The only real difference between the XPS and an Alienware is that Dell uses a propriatary motherboard. That won't mean much for anyone who buys a new computer every three or four years, but with the Alienware you can replace anything in it with store bought parts. If you want a new Motherboard or PSU for your Dell, it's Dell or nothing.
So the proprietary mobo is a good excuse to spend 1000 dollars more? LOL

I want an alienware too, but if I was thinking with my brain I'd order an XPS.
Have you guys heard much about VelocityMicro? I've been pricing their computers too and their reasonably priced.
Dell uses a great deal of proprietary parts in its computers. In some instances they even get 3rd party manufacturers to make trimmed down versions of their products to save them a few bucks at the cost of performance . That might be okay if you're more concerned with price, but if you're that concerned with price you shouldn't really be looking at Alienware as a realistic possibility.
they USED to trim down parts...the XPS is as close to retail as they can get...and its not a matter of being "concerned with price". Its bang for the buck...do I feel like getting ripped off another 800 bucks for 2 more FPS?? Or would I rather save 800 bucks and order a 20 inch LCD to go with my new system?
They why are you looking at AW if you're so convinced its a "rip off" to quote you?

price/performance

Guys, sorry, but AW's price to performance stinks. Dell's price/performance is better. That's what it comes down too: more bang for your pennies.

Yes, the AW looks awesome and sci-fi but it ain't worth the extra costs, in my opinion.
