file paging

Does anyone know what the optimal file paging (virtual memory) would be optimal for 768 megs of ram? I searched on the net and each site says something different. So I was wondering if people on the forums had any knowledge on this.

Supposedly it is always 1.5x the RAM, but I doubt it matters. The most memory my system ever used was around 800 megs (RAM and pf added.) That was playing unreal tournament at highest settings.

Believe it or not, XP seems to do best with the default dynamic page file size setting...

and put the pagefile on another partition (not the os)

like 2-50 MB paging file on c, the rest on another partition

why would you do that? what if the other partition is where youre programs are running from?

Well I create a static pagefile on another partition (with nothing else on it but the pagefile) at the beginning of the HD where access is fastest. This makes a difference, but only minutely. As for a good size, with 768MB you are not gonna be using the pagefile terribly much, so anywhere from 512MB up to 1GB is more than sufficient. I have mine set statically to 1GB, I know it is not gonna be used much, but it is there in case (and if setting it statically of course it is better to set the amount high rather than low).

Hi

I am also wondering about that and so far I always have set the pagefile to the size WinXP recommended. So with 1GB of RAM it is set to 1534 MB. Oh and I set it to a static one so both fields have the same size in it.
Although I have it on my C-Drive cause I need the space on the other partition and in my opinion it doesn't really make a difference to just move the pagefile to another partition as it physically still is the same HD.
