Acer 3200 and Doom 3

Can Acer Ferrari 3200 play Doom 3 without problems?
Or is the 3d card to slow?
The 3200 has the Mobile Radeon 9700 with 128megs, its about the fastest card out there for notebooks besides the new 9800 in the Dell. If you search the forums a little more you can see Doom3's performance on other notebooks with the same card.

I have a Gateway M505x with the ATI M10
Mobality Radeon 9600 with 64 megs
512meg sys ram on a centrino 1.4 and Doom 3 plays just ok to GREAT depending on what screen resoultion you have it on.

I run Doom 3 with the Settings on High
800x600 I ave 31fps so i'd guess over 40fps with the MR9700
1024x768 I ave 23fps over 30fps with the MR9700
1280x800 I ave 16fps and over 21fps with the MR9700

I ran the Doom3 Timedemo1 benchmark on my notebook and got the following results:

640x480 medium quality: 54.0 fps
640x480 high quality: 48.0 fps
640x480 ultra quality: 47.5 fps

I prefer running at 800x600 high quality where I get 40.1 fps. So you can expect to play Doom3 very smooth on this notebook without any problems

Snorre, how many FPS do you get with "high" settings at 1024x768? I couldn't stand to play a FPS at anything lower than that and prefer 1600x1200.

"high" quality for Doom3 was really ment for 256mb Video cards (although you can compensate with 1GB+ of RAM)

Second, you should check this out

Ouch, looks like I'll stick with RtCW.

Ferarri 3200

you can compensate for lower Memory video card with more System Memory???

I'm really REALLY wanting to be able to play CS Source on at least 1024 res with FPS no less than 60 at all times...

Is there anything i can do to tweak my system... get 7200 rpm HD?

get more RAM? i have 512, but i've tried 768... still not good enough performance on CS source...

Safely overclock my vid card?

Please help! If I can run CS source WELL, I won't sell my lappie...otherwise... I'm gonna have to sell and wait for MR9800 or PCI-e.

and from waht i understand the first gen PCI-e (x600) won't be better than MR9800...maybe even worse b/c only 4 pipelines instead of 8.....

It drops down to 23.8 fps in 1024x768 high quality, but Doom 3 seems playable at this and higher resolutions with medium or low quality settings.

Yes, many new games are very memory intensive and more and faster RAM will better performance.

More memory and faster hard drive will help in games, but optimized display drivers and overclocking the GPU will help the most. CS Source is still beta and the current display drivers are not optimized so I'd wait awhile after it goes gold before saying anything. I can say this much though, going from Catalyst (Omega) 4.7 to 4.8 (Omega is based on 4.9) increased the fps in Doom 3 by almost 20 fps on average.

From what I've seen the AGP 8X MR-9700 on the Ferrari is actually noticeably faster than the PCI-E x16 MR-X600, so you won't gain any performance in games chosing such a solution.
the x600 is only a PCI-E version of the Radeon 9600 TX...so the MR9800 will pwn it
post #12 of 14
wow, i will try the new Omega Drivers. I have only used stock ATI drivers.

And let you know how it goes. thanks
Wow, thanks snorre! Omega Drivers have helped Significantly. Where i used to get like 25-35 fps in firefights. Now I'm getting like 35-55 IN firefights!!!! Usually no lower than 45 fps, which is totally playable for me. Normally like 60-80 fps. This is with 1024 x 768 RESOLUTION! But for some strange reason, I don't seem to gain any FPS by lowering my resolution. My friend told me that it's because it's still beta and they still haven't optimized it. apparently it's highly dependent on your processor still.

You may have saved me from wasting a beautiful Ferrari 3200 laptop and going for a 2" 10lb clunky dell!!!

How much do you think I should spend on a 7600rpm HD and 1gb of RAM?

should I go with Dual channel ram? stock is pc2700... pc3200 worth getting? Thanks!

You can get the Hitachi 7K60 60GB 7200RPM hard drive for as low as $162:
http://www.pricewatch.com/h/prc.aspx?i=101&a=21259&f=1

and Corsair XMS3200 512MB SO-DIMM for as low as $105:

or Corsair Value Select PC3200 512MB SO-DIMM for as low as $97:

You need two such sticks to get 1GB memory.

It dosen't support dual channel RAM so forget that, but for the absolute best performance get low latency PC3200 memory like Corsair XMS3200.
