Who else here is excited about OLED technology and what it can mean for computers in general as well as laptops? I can't wait till they start releasing the displays some time next year. There is a lot of potential for this technology in my opinion.

*Edit* here is a link explaining the technology a simple search can find other information. http://www.kodak.com/eknec/PageQueri...q-locale=en_US

I've seen some things about it quite a time ago. Again, I won't even think of buying new technology. I'll stay with the good-old-experienced LCD technology for a while. Probably, for start, the prices will be kind of high, not suitable for common users like me.

Anyway, those things are sure for better, and I'll wait until it make its way to computer screens. Probably they will start on cell phones and digital cameras...

OLED is already available in many cellphones like Samsung. Not every model, but some.

I'm not too much on the cell phone market.... I think I'm 1 year behind the real things

Ive been excited for it mainly for monitor wise. Also there has been talk of being able to just roll up the screen in the future and put it away as well as being able to put it on clothing and other things due to low power consumption. Now just imagine tv built into your clothing so we can be lazy everywhere we go

as if we're not fat and lazy enough already lol.

OLED's are pretty nifty, but it'll be a while before we see it in laptop screens. Last I read it was way too expensive for anything bigger than a 2" screen.

That made me think of this:

edit: for what i've read, it's not oled. but this talk remembers me that we're approaching "The Jetsons" era

Yeah I remember reading about that in an issue of wired on super powers turned real life. The technology has limitation so far but its still freaking cool. Here is to all of us wearing tv clothes in the future

Samsung is already producing 1.7" OLED in volume for PDA's & cellphones (august 2004). Samsung is releasing a desktop 17" 1600x1200 OLED in mid-2005.
For several reason OLED's are almost the "holy grail" for notebooks.

First, OLED's are 1/3rd the thickness of LCD, mostly from a lack of a backlight.

Second, the refresh rate is in the time of 2-3ms, which equals around 333-500fps.

Thirdly, their viewing angle is an almost perfect 90 degrees from center, with no washout.

Fourth, because of the lack of a backlight, they take much less power to run.

The only way I could imagine any display being better is is it was somehow projected with the same clarity but in 3-D.

Read my sig.

There's only one thing wrong with an OLED ... IT'S ALIVE!!! AHHH!
Yup, I won't be making another lappy purchase until I get OLED. The worst OLED screen is 100X better than the best LCD screen. Before the life expectancy of these screens was too short and the cost of production was too high, but both of these problems have been solved. Within four years most high end lappies will have OLED screens.

Well as for 3d screens i believe sharp came out with a laptop that projected a 3d image if you sat right in front of it. With OLED I think this would be even more possible.

hum sounds like a good idea, flexy screens are something that are meant to be part of distant palm generations. Fold away pc

Yeah the coolest thing would be able to just have a keyboard as your laptop and pull the screen out from inside it. With OLED it is possible. I live right near Kodak where they developed it I wish I could see some of that technology right now.

what I'm worried about is that it could cost 100x lcd, do u know if the power consumption will be higher or lower?

also there are other screen technologys coming, out, there's a new one from Panasonic (I believe), that's a new type of flat crt/transistor display.

The power consumption is very very low, so low in fact that there was discussion that these displays could be sewn (spelling?) on clothing and create animated logos and other things. The price (since its organic) will drop once there is an acceptance by the industry. Once that happens I would expect it would be very cheap to make these displays. As for the panasonic technology, I had seen an article but what was shown so far looked to be able to produce only black and white images. OLED is much farther along and displays should be developed from many industry big names like sony, sharp, samsung, and others. Dupont co-developed the technology as well I think. These displays make plasma look like crap if you consider how thing and flexible they will be. Also the limit on sized would be increased. I wouldnt be surprised if enormous 72" or larger displays showed up.

bah 17 inch on a lappy is enough for me :P

But as long as the power consumption is low id get one, with 16 million colours, how could I say no

I would be happy with bigger display that would fold up and fit in a backback could you imagine the stares you would get if you just unrolled and turned on a 50 inch display in a park?
