no sound upon wake-up

Hi...long time listener, first time caller.

Recently bought a Satellite A70 and I'm debating whether I need to send it in for warranty work.

Upon waking-up from hibernate, I frequently have no sound. Usually a reboot fixes the problem, but that wreaks of effort.

Any thoughts on fixes? Anyone else with a similar problem?

well, that type of problem can be software related If it did it new out of the box then take it back and get another one that works right or send in for repair. You could use your recovery DVD to do a quick fomat and restore to original, do your windows updates, etc, make sure it all works right, then begin to add your software and see if any particular software causes it.

Thanks for the tip...

If I recall this was happening straight outta the box. The problem isn't consitently associated with any single program that I've been using so I didn't suspect a conflict. But it may be worth the effort to try a reinstall.

I'd still like to hear from anyone else out there who may be having or had the same problem.

Cheers!

I'm noticing the same problem on a new Satellite A75. If anyone knows of a solution, I'd love to hear about it.

Could be mistaking, but (pardon the pun) it sounds like a bios issue. Make sure that you've updated to the latest bios (off the Toshiba site).

An updated SoundMax driver was posted today @ Toshiba USA Support (at least for the Tecra M2).

Neither the bios update, nor the driver (updated?) seems to fix this problem.

Anyone else got an idea on how to fix this?

I'm now having this exact same problem on my Satellite A70...

Does anyone have a fix?

Univercity...

Just wondering if you've recently installed new software? Was the computer working fine previously, or is this a "straigth outta the box" problem you've noticed?

No it was not a straight out of the box problem. (Although I've only had the laptop for 2 months or so) It worked perfectly fine out of the box.

I really can't blame anything, it just sort of happened all of a sudden. I even used the recovery dvd to wipe the drive clean and reinstall XP, but the problem still exists.

Should I be calling Toshiba about this?

There is a discussion about this over here
No one has a fix yet.
Mine does it all the time. Sometimes I boot up fresh and I get no sound. There are MANY people with this issue.
I have an A75-S226 and it's been an 'out of the box' problem for me since day one.

You can click on the speaker icon and you'll see the volume slider is greyed out.

Well,

I finally gave in and call Toshiba support.

They tried to get me to do the usual...reinstall the drivers, reboot, etc.

Here's the bad news:

The guy basically said that I have to ship it in to Toshiba or take it in to a local shop for servicing.

He said something to the tune of "it's hardware or sound card problem that may with lose cables or something" then he went on to say that it had something to do with Windows. I don't believe he truly knew what he was talking about.

If this gets me frustrated enough, I will call up the local shop and have them try and fix this problem.

I will keep you all updated.

Let me know how it goes, because MANY people are experiencing this and I doubt it is something they can replicate and fix because it is a SPORADIC problem...

New A75 user here

Hi!

I stumbled on this forum after searching about info to the sound card problem.
My model is an A75-S2762. I love it and it's what I want in a laptop.

I guess I noticed the sound going out after I had placed a blanket on it while the lid was closed (hibernation mode) and the adaptor charger was on. Bad move. The laptop was hot to touch and the sound was out.

After things cooled down a bit, I got the sound back, but on occasion the sound was lost anytime I took it out of hibernation. Only a reboot would restore the sound in all cases.

I did call support and did get a quick response. The advice was to uninstall the Realtek sound drivers and install them again from the DVD. Which I did two or three times. The problem came back.

Now what I did two days ago was to go to the Toshiba Support web site and download the June 2004 Realtek driver package. I did not uninstall the drivers this time, I simple unzipped the package and ran setup. So far the problem has not returned. I hope that settles it.

<Nope, no sooner than I said that, my sound failed upon wake from hibernation >

Well, back to work.

Like everyone else, I don't want to have to nuke and reimage or send it to the repair depot.

Btw does anyone know if Toshiba provides Windows XP cdroms or do I have to use the DVD?

It's P!$$^ng me off too.

Yep, A75-S226 here. (3 months old, out-of-box problem).
When the sound goes, so does the modem.
I'm guessing that it is a hardware conflict, despite hardware manager reporting that all is OK.
I hope Toshiba get to the bottom of this one soon.

Yep, that sounds like a possibility, Tosher. Looking at resources for both devices I find both share IRQ 17, which reminds me of a very old problem when a modem and a mouse shared the same IRQ. The mouse pointer would sometimes freeze and I would have to reboot. Maybe I'll uninstall or disable the modem and see if that doesn't help.

Problem with a lot of large companies is that if it isn't in a tech bulletin, they are not going to aknowlege it.

interesting thing: I turned on system beep in the BIOS and it's been working flawlessly for over a month. (knock on wood)
Hmm, that's interesting Chapel, I will try that and let everyone know how it goes..
Update: Turning on system beep in BIOS has not worked for me.

question though. When it DOES beep, does your sound work?
