Windows Event Viewer

Everyone, I've been reading this thread for a while because I have the same exact problem. I have the A75-S206. I've noticed that when my computer boots with no sound, I have to do a full shut down and power on to get the sound back. Simply rebooting/hibernating/stand by does not solve the problem. Does anyone have to do the same?

I've also noticed this when the problem occurs: If you go to Start -> Control Panel -> Audio Devices, the Device volume section and Speaker Volume button are both disabled. Does anyone else see this?

Has anyone checked the Windows Event Viewer? Start-> Control Panel-> Administrative Tools-> Event Viewer. Then click on system. Look for any messages that say Error with a red X. Does anyone have any of those? I have a couple but they seem to be unrelated.

Also, does anyone have Linux installed on this laptop? If so, do you have the same problem?

I know we can figure out this problem. We need to narrow it down to see whether it's software or hardware related.

Thanks.

I SERRIOUSLY think I found something!!!!!!

How many of you have norton symantek antivirus? since I desistalled norton (2 weeks) I did not get ANY problem with lost sound at laptop startup.

I had the sound issue from DAY ONE, send the laptop to repair, did not found anything...

Now been running without Norton for two weeks, my system is runing flawlessy. I installed "AVAST" antivirus last nignt and still everything run PERFECT.

The reason why I desinstalled norton it's because I was not able to temporary disable the auto protek , the pop us telling me it was off keep and keep comming back, even after I tell him not to notify me.

Dont forget to be carefull without antivirus, I was behind a firewall with "firefox".

I will keep you updated, been two weeks with every day startup without any sound problems!!!

interesting.. i though you people DO know that Norton Antivirus isn't good (doesnt detect most viruses, and is very CPU hungry)
And i didnt have Norton Antivirus and i still had no-sound on wake-up issue.
If you are going to uninstall Norton (I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THAT) then take a look at this:
www.free-av.com
I use this antivirus for 1.5 years and didnt have ANY problem so far (just keep up-to-date VDF (Virus Definitions File)).
It is LEGALLY FREE FOR PERSONAL USE ONLY.
Well, i hope i helped someone,
Thanks

Hey guys,

I've been following this thread for the past few days and I think I've noticed something: nobody has tried sending it in for repair! I know its a bit of an inconvenience, but I'm almost certain its a hardware issue.

I've been experiencing almost exactly the same symptomns with my toshiba (although its a Tecra S1 and not a Satellite) - the soundcard would play sounds at half-speed after a warm boot, and the only cure was to shutdown and start up again (cold boot). Or, if I was feeling lazy, sometimes i could disable the soundcard in the device manager and enable it again - that fixed the problem most of the time. And on some mornings there was no sound at all.

I finally got fed up with it and sent it in for warranty repair, and guess what? They've replaced the AMR modem (seems almost completely unrelated to the soundcard) but it fixed it!!

Apparantly the modem was broken and thats what was causing the soundcard problem (I've never used the modem in the laptop). You could try disabling the modem from the device manager and see if it makes a difference, although I STRONGLY recommend getting your laptops repaired - hopefully they're still under warranty...

Good Luck

I already sent mine, they could could not find the problem!!!!!! they replaced the top cover with keyboard but did not find anything about the sound problem...

I bought the extended protection plan from "futureshop" (aka best buy in usa), I will probably try to get a new one in a couple of month...

It is more like a software problem... BUT i argree that there is someting worng with modem (i never used it, i got T1 internet, but i had pop-up with error when i was instaling drivers)

I think I've got an answer (& other famous last words)

The following tweak has seemed to make my problem go away. Of course, I've said this before and the problem re-appeared later.

CAUTION: I DO NOT RECOMMEND CHANGING THE REGISTRY. DO SO AT YOUR OWN RISK! (READ SAFER OPTION AT BOTTOM)

[begin]
Force Windows to Unload DLLs from Memory

Windows Explorer caches DLLs (Dynamic-Link Libraries) in memory for a period of time after the application using them has been closed. This can be an inefficient use of memory on low memory systems, and may cause problems or delays for programmers developing with Windows DLL files.

Open your registry and find the key [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer].

Create a new sub-key named 'AlwaysUnloadDLL' and set the default value to equal '1' to disable Windows caching the DLL in memory.

Restart Windows for the change to take effect.

Settings
System Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\
AlwaysUnloadDLL]
Value Name: Default
Data Type: REG_SZ (String Value)
Value Data: (1 = enable)
[end]

Or do what I did:
Download and install trial version of Tweak Manager
Under MyComputer/Windows/System there is a option called "force windows to unload DLLs from Memory" -

try it and let us know what happened.

Disregard the fix described above. It doesn't work after all. Sorry about that.

Hi all!

I just bought my laptop (A70) a few months ago and was having this problem so I stumbled upon this board and tried a bunch of things from here but they didn't quite work for me.

However, for those of you who still have the problem I may have a work-around solution (at least it seems to work in my case and don't recall seeing this solution posted yet):

When you bring your laptop out of hibernation and don't have sound, press the little hibernation button at the front of your laptop for 1-2 seconds. When it goes into hibernation, press the button again after 1-2 seconds and the sound should come back.

I stumbled upon this quite by accident but it has worked for me everytime I have tried it. I don't know if this may affect the performance of the laptop but I don't think it should.

Try this out and see if it works, and please let me know if there are may be any side affects to keep on hibernating/de-hibernating.

Good luck!!

* Possible Fix *

I've been following this forum for the past two months and tried everything. I hope this fix isn't posted above, but since I've already been through this list I'll post away...

First I un-installed Service Pack 2

Then I went to:

http://www.toshiba.ca/support/Download/ln_byModel.htm (sorry but I don't know the link for the American site)

After choosing my computer model (Toshiba A70)

Download: BIOS Update (Windows Installation)
File name: 4A70150.EXE

After it installs it will shut down your computer, wait awhile then start it back up.

You should have sound! I reinstalled Service Pack 2, and have shut down, and put it into hibernation and on stand-by and it seems to keep the sound on just like a good computer should.

I will give an update in a few days, and one asap if it cuts out.

Best of luck to everyone!

Update

Well I've gone through the weekend with no major problems!

I've been putting it in Stand-by and into Hibernation constantly and the sound has been returning.

Hope it keeps working

Well... as much as I love posting here... I think I spoke to soon...

The problem is back in all its glory! So now I will get to send my laptop away for 2 plus weeks to fix something that should not be a problem.

The bottom line, if you're buying a laptop stay away from the Toshiba A70!

News: I finally gave up and called Toshiba with just 14 days left on my warranty. They sent me a postage paid box with inside padding. I sent it to them on a Monday and I received it back the following Monday. I was very pleased and surprised that they got it back to me so quickly. They replaced a system board and even grounded the top cover, as there is a known static electricity problem with the AS75's top cover. Now my sound works perfectly every time. I waited a week to post this because I wanted to make sure everything is really fixed.

da8om8's post above is right on. The easiest and most effective way to get the sound fixed is to break down, like I did, and send it into Toshiba...hopefully before your warranty period is up.

Well I've had it all now!

Just my a75 206 back from Toshiba sevice. It was running on battery all the time even when plugged to AC. There was some kind of loose connection in the power plug on puter. They don't solder they replace. They installed a new system board and a new top cover (for known speaker short problem).
I am def. buying the 3 year warranty from them if this kinda shii t is going to continue. Three months left on my one year at this point.

Sound prob. seems to be gone for some reason

3 different problems

hy, sorry my bad english

I have a toshiba a75-s229, whith some sound problem, i mine, sounnd, modem und irq 17 problem.
I have read this forum and i find many people have different problems, with different solutions, i think.

1 problem is the hibernation problem, i think this can be a sofware problem, but i donk know, in this forum are to many solutions, that`s not my case.

2 problem ist The Toshiba A70 and A75 series was built and sold with a fatal design flaw. The speakers and other parts of the case are not properly grounded, causing any static electricity to be transmitted directly into the machine. I performed a test described by other users - simply walking across a carpet and then touching the left front speaker - which caused the computer to freeze. That is`t my case to.

And 3 problem, MY CASE, the computer boots with no sound, I have to do a full shut down and power on to get the sound back. Simply rebooting/hibernating/stand by does not solve the problem.
The first time i turn the computer on, the bip sound of the bios is not working, and then the souun of OS , no work to.

I dont know what to do, i have do everything, this is a hardware problem.
my computer is a Refurbished product, and they have not more warranty.

Can anybody help me, please.

deutsch?

From my understanding, the A75 has a problem with the speakers. Apparently the speakers are not properly grounded and stop working sporadically when they overload.
Someone mentioned that the palm rest has to be replaced with one that is grounded properly.

back to english...
I know you tested the static discharge by walking across the carpet and touching, but that's not always the problem. Static electricity can simply build up and discharge INSIDE the case (fans, dust, etc...)
I think the replacement of the palm rest is the only real answer.
My answer was buying a PCMCIA Sound Blaster... that fixed it.

When i turn the computer on, the first time, in the morning, the beep not work, and the SO sound not work, and the modem, not work, the both use the same irq (17). Then i reboting the system, nothing. I have to turn it of and then on, then the system beep get and the OS sound to, and the modem.
And when the sound work, they work fine, no problem, i can turn it of, and then turn it on, and they still working. Only after the computer have been not workinig for one hour yhe problem come back.
I dont know if this are a static problem, but my a75 have no frezzed.
My computer have no hibernatin probleme to.
I dont know, plese help me, please, please, please

Ok, ahora
