driver problem please help!

I recently bought an alienware laptop on e-bay, a 5620D. Windows XP pro is installed,(no COA) no problems in device manager etc, but the little media center on the front doesn't work. I assumed I needed a driver so I went to alienware.com to download it, only to find out that alienware only provides drivers to customers who buy computers from THEM....what CRAP!

o.k. so I call them and I need the "black folder" that originally came with the laptop and has all the drivers/OS disks and an account number in order to access alienware support at all. Contacting the seller has proven futile.

Am I S.O.L? Or is there a way for me to get drivers for my machine? Anyone have an account number they can share without breeching their privacy so I can access alienware support page? I just want a little support for the used laptop I just bought in good faith.

Ul guy,

I suggest you contact the person you bought it from. Is the XP copy legit?

Also try the Clevo/Sager website...they are the original manufacturer of that machine...they may be able to help.

no luck. saeger only had the basic drivers. The only thing that isnt working is the media center thingy in the front. I suspect the previous owner doesnt have the black folder either, and formatted, found the MB/vieo/sound drivers from intel and ATI, then ran into the same problem I have, then sold it.

No idea if the windows copy is legit. I have a key finder utility, so I can use that if I ever need to re-install windows, but I just want to get everything out of this laptop I can, and alienware seems to not care about its customers who don't buy directly from them. Seems kind of assinine to me. The used computer market is alive and well, but alienware doesn't seem to think so.

Why should they support a used purchase? They didn't get paid out of the transaction so how can they pay the support person to help you?

I think its a buyer beware society we live in...and you were unfortunately lead to believe the machine was in perfect working order. You got burned...don't put it on Alienware.

I believe Alienware does not need to offer technical support via phone or anything but they should at least offer all drivers on their products for anyone in the general public to download like every other manufacturer. Then it is up to the person to get them working. Since companies like nVidia and ATI like to make mobile graphics drivers the responsibility of the notebook vendor it just makes sense they should offer these to everyone who may own one of their notebooks regardless of where they purchased it. I agree with you Ulermacleod and I would like to see Dell try and pull this off and get away with it. Their definately is a market for used notebooks out there and if anything I would think Alienware would want to capitalize on that by charging people for technical support who are not under any warranty.

My thoughts exactly. I dont need phone support or anything, I would just like to be able to download drivers for my product to make it work, like I can with every other hardware manufacturer ive ever heard of. It is completely unreasonable, and SHOULD be illegal for alienware to limit drivers to new computer customers only. Hell, I would even be willing to PAY for the drivers, but they won't even do that.

I respect that thought. So I just went and looked...There is an audio driver and a hot key driver.

PM me your email and I'll send them to you.

Shoot, all i've done,, is used my friends high broadband cable and I downloaded every single Folder with Drivers and Applications on their website and Ftp,,, yeah it took awhile,, but i got a nice collection like AW's

I figured it this way,,,my 56 k at my home is slow, and sometimes living in the sticks, my ISP gets knocked out, and i wanted to have every file and app at my immediate disposal,,, and it sure is nice,,,,,, I copied bunch of info from their knowledge base too, so when i need info, i just search my lappy,,
its like a AW server right at home,,,lol
believe me though,, even using that high broadband,, it took alittle time, but well worth it!!!
