WXGA vs WSXGA+ - Page 2

You can find the 9600/9700 wallpapers at http://www.hkss.com/inspiron8600

As for my WXGA... it's big.. yea.. but i sit my laptop on a computer desk and I have the keyboard about 1.5 meters away from the laptop screen. I can see all the text perfectly from that distance.. which is why I opted for this "big" screen. With the WSXGA+, I guess it depends on how great your eyesight is.. but the text and font are all too small from that distance.

I suppose that is what WXGA would be good for. For me, I use my laptop screen about 70cm away from my face, and only use and external mouse (Bluetake Bt500), not an external keyboard.

Well, every resolution seems 'too small' or 'too big' if you're not used to it. I used to use 800x600 religiously, then I went to 1024x786 and I thought 'this is hella small'. Now whenever I go back to 800, I can't stand it, it's enormous.

Don't think I'll ever quite get my eyes around 1280x1024 though.

True. It is really personal preference.

Im finally getting used to my WXGA screen on my 8600, wish it could be bigger but anything other than the 96dpi is just to fuzzy for my liking! The resolution on my desktop certainly makes things bigger but i can't get the same resolution on my lappy so im satisfied with what it's at now. Although, i did read somewhere where you could change things in your IE going through certain steps in msconfig i think it was to change your IE settings so if you do change the resolution it won't get blurry but i am a chicken and don't want to chance it. lol. With my luck i'd mess up my computer totally lol

yea just play around with your laptop for awhile at that resolution. don't worry... you'll soon get use to it... it just takes time.

personally.. sometimes i find this WXGA screen of mine too "big" because sometimes i use my friends WSXGA+ and when i make the transition back to my WXGA, it's so big!

That's what i think! Being on XGA for the last 1.5yrs has made me long for something higher.

What I like to know:

Are there any users who switch from a 8200 with 1600x1200 screen to a WXGA (1280x800) and/or WUXGA (1920x1200) / WXGA+ (1680x1050)? And what do you prefer?

The situation:

I'm currently owning a 8200 with 1600x1200 screen and looking for a new laptop. I narrowed down my choice between the Dell 8600 (with one of the above screen types) and the brand new Toshiba M30X-102 with WXGA screen. The problem is: I realy love my Dell screen, but the Toshiba has a mobility Radeon 9700 with 128megs, a XD picture card slot (I own a Olymous C5060 WZ with uses an XD card), build in 802.11g (no extra cost) The Toshiba is around 1600 euros the Dell is close to 2200 euros.

My desktop PC running a 17" monitor connected to a Radeon 9700 Pro is running at a resoltuion of 1280 x 1024. Anything either way is either a little too big or a little too small for my personal preference.

I am looking into purchasing a Dell 8600 for its mobility and speed as an alround performance laptop. My question is what screen should I get in order to get it as close as possible to my desktop setup mentioned above. I am aware that screen size and resolution is proportional to how big icons and fonts look. My desktop is 17" and this laptop is 15.4", so it looks to me that SXGA would be best suited to me. Is this a correct assumption?

Ted.

Yup. The WSXGA+ would be a good choice in your situation.

Your resolution: 1280 x 1024

The WXGA: 1280 x 800
The WSXGA+: 1650 x 1050

With the WXGA, you'll get the same amount of width as you would with your PC's resolution, but you'll sacrifice height.

With the WSXGA+, you'll definately get a heck of alot more room to work with, but at the same time, I think the icons/fonts will look somewhat (but not a whole lot) smaller versus your PC's icons/fonts.

Considering the size difference between 17" 4:3 and 15.4" Widescreen, if there was a screen resolution between WXGA and WSXGA+, that would best suit your preference.

Too bad you couldn't include my WXUGA 1920 X 1200 or 2 million, 304 thousand 400 pixels in the same 15.4 diaginol 16 X 10 Wide Screen configuration picture!

Um, why are you resurrecting a three year old thread only to link to the same three year old thread?
