Be honest, is sager reliable? - Page 4

if you actually use your laptop as a laptop, i would run.
laptops should last more than 1 year, and should not break 1 week after the warrenty expires.
i sugest you read this.

No, not reliable. I've never owned a worse laptop than the 8790. I've had to RMA it 5 times so far, and right now it's sitting in a box waiting to be shipped to Micromedics for the 6th time. GPU overheating and causing unbearable artifacts, motherboard so borked that the computer wouldn't turn on, screen that would represent black colors as red depending on the screen-body angle. Oh, and my 8790 was outperformed by a Dell laptop that didn't cost more than half of the Sager, bought that same year.
The 8790 was absolutely fine for the first 6 months, then its artifacting became intolerable. Sager doesn't seem to be a brand that cares much about long term durability of their laptops.

If I ever had to buy a high performance laptop again, which I really doubt I'll ever do because of their clearly inferior performance compared to desktops, I'd go for a XPS, NOT Sager.

Not reliable. My 5680 arrived with a weird gimped out bluetooth with a range of 5cm reception. The DVD combo drive crapped out after 5 months when the DVD laser croaked, then the CD laser croaked after a year.

Otherwise...it's still chugging along. No other problems. But the hassle of RMAing is going to keep me away from another Sager...

Price may seem attractive when compared to alienware/hypersonic, but the hassle of returning damaged or funky parts will eat up your time and money.

I still have great affection for this notebook...but I'm not going for another Sager until their build quality improves a whole lot.

Well, I guess my laptop got sensitive to my comments and decided to short out my escape key. Now I have to disconnect my keyboard and hook up a desktop keyboard to be able to do anything in windows.

Summary
Bluetooth: DOA
CD/DVD: 1yr lifespan /4months lifespan
Keyboard: 2 yrs, 3 months.

Any tips on cleaning the keyboard from a 5680?

Oh dear god, I can't help myself...I think I'm gonna go for a 5760 now...

I've had 2 Sagers and both are still alive and kicking. One is 4 years old and the other is 2. I had to RMA the first on after 11 months as the graphic card went bad and the Mobo was replaced at no cost.

I know this thread started over a year ago, and so the original poster could be dead and buried by now, but I never miss out on a chance to praise my 3790. This thing is awesome. I've had it for 2.5 years and it is still kicking ass. I have not had one issue - minor or major.

I bought it for my first year of law school when everyone else was buying Dells, Sonys, macbooks, HPs and Compaqs. I beat the hell out of this thing. I carry it in my backpack on the NYC subway system and put it through the hell of packing/unpacking it for every class 5 days a week. I'm also pretty rough in terms of applications I throw at it - uploading performance-intensive game demos, playing them for a couple weeks, and then deleting them; I've got pretty serious audio-and-video editing software; and I cycle through 20 gigs of music every few months. But when I look around the classroom I'm one of the very few people still using the same laptop they started school with. I'm almost CERTAINLY the only person who hasn't ever had to send the laptop in for any sort of repairs. And the majority of these people do nothing but take notes on their rigs.

I would say that Sager is very reliable. In fact, you would be hard-pressed to convince me to buy anything but a Sager when I'm finally ready to upgrade.

I agree. I own 2 now and 1 more in the past the just became completely obsolete.

Very reliable.

I'm done with Sager. I have my second one, a 3790, now. I bought it just before my 5660 died. Imo the 5660 had poor cooling design, causing the mobo to fry. My touchpad on my 3790 is crap. Just died for the third time. Forget it I will just get by using a mouse. The power input broke also. Had to RMA for that. Took a loooong time and too much money to replace one small cheap part. Thing was just too hard to disassemble for me to replace it myself. Anyway, with a mobile cpu instead of a desktop cpu, I am hopeful this one will last longer than the 2 years that the other one lasted. Otherwise, the few hundred I spent on repairs and shipping in December was a stupid waste. Next time I am buying a more reliable brand with faster better repair options.

I bought a 5720 just over a year ago and it died within hours of turning it on. Took alot of hassle and phone calls to Sager to get them to admit the mobo was dead and it wasnt my fault. I ended up driving up to their HQ get the issue resolved. I was 1 month past my warranty and the mobo died again. There is no way in hell I am going to deal with sending my laptop back to those guys and pay to have them fix it. This time I did the smart thing and went with an Alienware.

Overall I would say Sagers are not reliable, and Sager as a company has horrible customer service and tech support.

MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE: Sager is good, their support is good. I have a 9880 bought in 2005.

The power supply unit has a tendency to give up the ghost (they run about $120 each time) - not covered by any of the warranties-even extended ones. The monitor tends to loosen at the sides (so it won't stay fully open) and the power plug in back tends to get "loose" so even if you have a good power supply - which I do, I just bought another, the connection between the power cord and the laptop is spotty - which translates to CRASHES and loss of data.

WHATEVER YOU DO DON'T BUY IT FROM PCTORQUE. They use to be good, but they've gone seriously down the tubes. I've been trying for a week to get someone on the phone or to call me. I paid at the time of purchase for the super-dooper extended warranty - 3 yrs on-site, 1 yr phone and 1 yr damage...Guess What? I can't get anyone on the phone no matter what time I call. I can't seem to get a call back - I've left multiple messages AND I even submitted a support request online. I've called ALL of their warranty support companies (Philips/Magnavox, Warrantech & Force One) and NO ONE has heard of me! The support cards I had issued to me - the number listed doesn't even work... STAY AWAY FROM PCTORQUE..this is too important and EXPENSIVE of an investment to get left HANGING IN THE WIND!! AT the time of purchase, I paid around $4K for my pc, fat lot that's doing me now!

GOOD LUCK!

I don't have a sager or any type of laptop but I have only heard good things about Sager. I mean yes there are some bad stories but that happens to every company.
