Acer 2012 buffs need help

I’m new to forum and have a question regarding my Acer 2012wlmi. When I first got it worked fine with 3d games not giving me any issues. I could play for hours without problems. Played Never Winter Nights, UT2004, and C&C Generals. All at pretty high settings and it looked and performed great. Now about 2 min into any of these games my laptop freezes. The only way to turn it off is to hold down the power button for greater than 5 sec. Then half of the time it wont start back up unless I let it sit for a while. Anyway any advise the Acer gurus can give me? If I can provide any more information to help please let me know.

Thanks,

Sounds like you are having an overheating problem. If the unit works fine when you are not running games. It might be the cooling fan, The cooling fan on my 2025 will usually kick in a few minutes after I start a game. Listen to see if it's coming on, if not that might be our problem.

Wiz33,

That was what I was leaning towards from other posts I have read about the 9700M. Matter of fact I havent heard the fan kick on as much. It kicks on when I first start it (maybe thats the DVD drive though). Is this something I can check myself or adjust or will I have to send it in? I just got finished reading the ACer support sucks thread and I am already having nightmares...

download speedfan - it shows you the fan speeds.

It is the fan... It doesnt come on once the computer OS is loaded. I notice it does come on when I turn on the computer during boot up. So the fan works but whatever tells the fan to turn on isnt sending the message. Anyway i can fix this myself?? PLEASE HELP....

Doubt you can fix it youself, it sounds like the thermal sensor that turns the fan on and off is dead.
