how reliable are SONY VAIOs?

I'm looking at the A140 15.4" Sony VAIO, but had some concerns about reliability. I've heard so much praise about the IBM Thinkpads and the G4 Powerbooks, but not much about the VAIO.

What bad experiences have you guys had with your VAIOs?

I have a Sony Vaio Z1 and I love it...I have had absolutely no problems at all....It runs well...and there have been no glitches at all what so ever....my mom has a sony vaio, an older version of the T versions...she has had it for about.....4 years or more...and it still runs fine..it is old...and she has gotten a new computer since then..lol but she never had any problems with it...and she continues to use it... its still in excellent condition.
so maybe that helps....

As long as your machine is problem free, you're in the clear. Once you need support, you're in deep sh1t. Sony's support and web site are one of the worst. I could never find any answers on their KB nor drivers from their support page. I used to have the 505s and xg500 and both were solid well made notebooks.

I just finished upgrading my old Sony PCG Vaio of 4 years. Added more ram and new hard drive. Never had any problems with it and when i went to sony's page i quickly and easily found the drivers i needed.

I consider Sony's build quality to be good to above average. Their technical support is usually poor though but i can depend on myself to fix things. Their web page for driver and software support has gotten better over the years. It was pure crap when i first got the notebook.

Lastly i still consider Sony to be over priced for the components they use. This even after owning one. Their style and presentation are excellent but they skimp on the internals. It never gave me any problems but i used it mostly for web surfing and document editing.

Sony machines usually work quite well, just are overpriced.

Never have any problem at all using my VAIO A170.
The only problem is that the Sony USA support is poor. However I can contact my nearest Sony Thai in my country and they help me well.
About IBM they are the best in both the performance and quality of their product and support so I wouldn't be surprise.
