ACER 8006LMi review - Page 3

Yeah i know...but i thought id try it anyways...having owned a few dell's i know that sometimes dell put in minor thermal amendments relating to fans and power management in their bios's but rarely mentioned them in the release notes, only bothered mentioning big changes.

Keep wondering whether to try the secure card out or not, would be useful to keep my gf off the machine when im not there, but on the other hand id be scared of losing the card as i know the 2nd card is an emergency card and if u lose the 1st you have to send the machine back to acer...(and they will presumably charge you for this honour lol)...

Just got my 8006!

I just get got my Acer travelmate 8006 from my retailer yesterday, and so far I not disappointed. However, I do have a few questions for you 8006 owners.

1. Do I need the ACERDATA-partition now that the system is installed? Can I format it and use as an ordinary harddrive?
2. I have plans to upgrade the harddrive to a 7200-drive. I opened the lid that is supposed to cover the harddrive but I couldn’t see the harddrive. Have you guys any experience of changing the harddrive? Do I need to remove other things? More screws? Is there a step by step description somewhere? The manual doesn’t say much about this issue.
3. Did you guys get a winXP cd with your 8006? What if I want to reinstall windows? Do I need to use the recovery cds? Seems awkward...

1. format it to NTFS, because its fat32 when you get it.
2. dont know, i didnt change it myself
3.you get the recovery cd-s. BUT you can copy Win Xp pro cd from someone else and use it with your serial number. thats 100% legal.

Eject button problems

Do any of you guys have probelm with locking the eject button for the PC-card? The eject function works fine but the button does not stay in when I have ejected the PC-card (or the dummy), it sticks out about 1 cm. I'm afraid that it will break when it sticks out like this. Is there like a secret grip to get the pin to stay in?

Pull out the dummy, AND THEN press the button, and then GENTLEY put the dummy. That’s the procedure
post #46 of 77
I have tried that like a million times, even if I remove the dummy I can´t lock the ejector pin. The mechanism must simply be broken...
sigh... this means that I must send it back for repair or they get me a new one... that sucks...
The strange thing is that the same thing happend to me before i got my 8006 when I was in my local computer store to check out the Ferrari and the 6000-series. I ejected the dummy and I couldn´t lock the pin again, on both models! It is either a common problem with this chassi or it is simply me being unable to work the mechanism...

maybe you should let someone else try before you send it for repairs

i've updated the review with a 3dmark05 benchmark. for some reason it keeps crashin on every omega since catalyst 4.8 so i used them. they seem to work very good for me since they generaly got my scores higher a bit in all the benchmarks. i updated them as well.

i've updated the review with a new 3dmark05 benchmark score. finally made the newest omega based on 4.10 catalyst to work (had to format, and reinstall win). they made my score look a lot better now. 1104 gpu and 3125 CPU.

I ran a few benchmarks on my 8006 the other day. I have the standard system spec. for the 8006, that is: same as Uriel but only 512Mb RAM and a 80Gb 4200 drive. I use the standard vga-driver provided by Acer (7.981-040127m-014670C-Acer). All tests were run while on AC power. These are my results:
3DMark01 score : 9665
3DMark03 score : 2838 (CPU 621)
3DMark05 score : 992
AquaMark score : 22157
PcMark04 score : 3914

I don´t know how the difference in hd matters (concerning graphics: probably not much) but the differnce in memory seems to boost the performance about 10%, not bad. I think I should mention that my system is pretty packed with programs at the moment, including a licence server which could have an impact of the performance. But I have to say that I am quite satisfied with the results. Especially since my desktop computer (P4 3.2Ghz, Radeon 9600, 1024Mb RAM) manages only to win over the 8006 concerning graphics performance with a rather small margin, at least when running Doom3 timedemo.
I think that I will be using my lappy on the next LAN-party.

hmm. try to get the new omega drivers, and set all to optimal performance. that should boost your performance by a noticable percent.

you should read this guide too GUiDE . i't ll help you boost performance marginally, and improve boot time big time.

also get addware SE profesional, that will help you remove all spyware and addware and thus improving overall performance.

anyone figured out how to get estimated time on battery?
Hi, could someone post any pictures of the 8006 with a few screens with games being played on it, as this is what I'm mainly buying one for over the 2026 and ferrari 3400

Thanks

Pete

I have not found a way to find out the estimated remaining time for the battery. There is probably some smart software out there but I have not found any, yet...

I tested the Omega drivers in order to boost the 3D graphics performance, and yes... I got a nice little boost!

3Dmark01 : from 9665 to 10566 (+9%)
3Dmark03 : from 2838 to 2886 (+2%)
3Dmark05 : from 992 to 1066 (+7%)
Aquamark : from 22157 to 24138 (+9%)

I also did a few Doom3 timedemo tests and with the lower resolutions (800x600 and 1024x768) I got a performance boost between 20% and 25%! Not bad at all!

Anyone know anything more about how to exchange the HD which was discussed earlier? I just ordered a 8006WLMi and a Hitachi 7200 rpm 60GB disk which I need to exchange myself...

it's extremly easy, just look under the notebook. you'll find the HDD lid.

Sure. The only problem you may encounter is that face cover on the new drive may be smaller/different shape/different color. Unfortunately, each drive seems to have it's own method of fixing that face-plate so you are unlikely to be able to swap it with your old drive.
Other than that, the overall form, connector, and screw holes are standard, and you will be able to affix new CDRW drive in the caddy - it's just 6 screws: two on each side and two on the back of the caddy.
