Batteries work ... for about 5 minutes.

So I never noticed this before until I had to go on a trip.

My battery works for about 5 minutes; the battery meter starts at 100% and then as soon as it gets to be 97%, the computer shuts down. I have to plug it in again to get it to start up, then the battery meter reads 6% when XP loads again.

Any ideas?

my 8887 did the same. i don't think the 8887's charge their batteries correctly. mine stopped holding charge after like 4 months.

My 8886 does the same. I first noticed it about a year after purchase...Anyone know any way to fix this? (maybe an external charger to fix the battery or something?)

does it get drained fully?

My 8887 is similar, but I never used the battery so I did not expect it to retain a charge.

I don't pretend to fully understand battery technology, but from what I've gathered if you just leave your laptop plugged in for the majority of the time, it kills your battery to the point you can't even boot up with it. And AFIK, there's no way to reverse it. I'm afraid you're looking at buying a new battery or being confined to an outlet.

Funny you should mention this effect.
My 8890 is on AC most of the time but recently I have been battery powered and I noticed mine drop to 33% then 6% almost within a minute.
However having used it on batteries for a few times I has come good.

My suggestion would be to unplug it from AC turn it on an let it do its thing. Repeat this a few times - you may find it fixes it.

Otherwise it could be a dodgey Li-Ion cell.

Let us know how you get on.

for ur information, I have an old laptop HP.after less2 years of use, mainly pluged with the battery inside, ...now my battery is dead and I threw it away.
I suggest you if you are pluged, take away your battery.charge/discharge ur battery at least once or 2 a month .this is what I will do when i will have my new laptop.

Same here,

My 5620's battery is dead. I had it always on with it inside. Now I just took it out and let it just run on AC (UPS covered )

Just a suggestion to everyone. Even if the battery only lasts 5 min, leave it in. It will help protect the laptop with power surges and power outs long enough to shut it down. If it is completely dead then just save the outer casing depending on the Laptop.
