ATTENTION: All 4750 Owners!!!

WHEN PLUGGED IN, ALWAYS USE THE "ALWAYS ON" POWER SCHEME!!!

This can be found be right-clicking the desktop, going to the Screen Saver tab, clicking the Power button, and choosing "Always On" from the power schemes pull-down menu.

If you don't do this, your 4750 may crash due to overheating. If you use the "laptop/portable" power scheme to enable Powernow! for extended periods of time, the machine may become too hot because the fans only turn on to cool off the processor roughly once every 15 minutes for about 3 minutes. This is insufficient to cool the rest of the machine's components and eventually something will overheat and you will see a blue error screen for a half second before your LCD shuts off and your 4750 becomes unresponsive. This happened to me many, many times before I finally discovered what the problem was.

Now that my fans are always on, my machine never crashes even during marathon gaming sessions. w00t!

Hope this helps anyone having problems with crashing. Long live the 4750!

is this just something we have to live with when we have these more powerful desktop processors in laptops, fans on all the time, that is? makes me consider a silenced desktop more seriously.

well i was using the laptop/portable mode with no problem, but i like having constant temps of 47-49 rather then it getting to 55 before the fans came on.
Well, I've been using desktops for years that have the fans (all of em) on all the time. And many of them, including my current one, were/are louder than the fans in the 4750.

But it would be nice to have lower temps, whether the fans are running all the time or not.

well i did the arctic silver mod, plus im using a heatpipe cooler so those are both ways of cooling it a bit, plus their silent.

yeah, the combo does work pretty well although no cooler would keep the 4750 from overheating after extended sessions on laptop mode.

I was wondering...Does the 8790 experience similiar heating issues? The P4's should be running much hotter. Is the cooling system that much better on the 8790?

yeah I think it is, mostly due to a larger chassis. I don't think they have issues like this because the P4's don't have powernow.

I think it would be helpful to all of the 4750 owners if Sager or Clevo would come out with some of their testing results to give owners an idea of the best use scenario.

Are the fans loud in silent (continious running) mode? It can imagine it's pretty anoying when you're just typing in word.. during gameplay it's not a problem

You can barely here the fans when there on. Especially if your in a dorm room. I was reading a mod magazine and its possible to use dry ice to cool your processor. Talk about overclocking. it lowers temperatures to -30 C! and -17C when overclocked! He he. Although a copper mod which would probably cost a bit due to the price of copper would work well. I have also read about heat sinks that liquids in some of the pipes for better heat disspertion. I wonder if one could fit in in the 4750.

I sent sager tech support an e-mail at websupport@sagernotebook.com requesting they release a Bios update so we can select to have the fans run constantly as a "Very low" setting until they are required to spin up rather than have them shut off completely. I still think it's stupid for us to waste the advantages of PowerNow!/Cool 'N Quiet in terms of lower temperatures and less power surging through the mainboard just because we need to keep the processor hot enough to keep the fans running. Plus you'd probably start seeing sub 40*C temps when you weren't working it .

I'd suggest you guys all e-mail them similar requests, put a little pressure on them!

That's a very good idea Air, there should also be a way to manually adjust fan speed with some sort of fn toggle
post #14 of 16
Screw FN toggle, I just want something! Even the Toshiba Portege 2000 had a cooling option that was selectable in its power profile.

I think an option where we can select intermittent or always on for the fans isn't too much to ask...when I had my POS AW they were able to push out an update to disable those stupid blinking eyes.
Sweet. So the sager was better in your opinion.
My AW blew. It had all sorts of issues that they pushed it out with just to make the sale even though it wasn't ready. On top of that, it overheated and smoked at one point although it luckily kept running so I could back up my stuff. They also wanted a month for repairs. I had it for 3 months but was able to force a return since they acted in an illegal manner in several ways.

Persistence, pays off bigtime
