Ferrari 3200 + Mushkin (Kingmax) 1G PC3200 SODIMM ram - not working

I just got a stick of 1 GB Mushkin (it's using Kingmax chips and cpuz reports it as Kingmax PC3200, CL2.5) PC3200 SODIMM ram and tried to plug it into my Ferrari 3200. Unfortunately, these combination doesn't seems to work well.

Here is my results:

1 GB Mushkin (Kingmax) PC3200 only - unable to boot, blank screen when trying to boot up

1 GB Mushkin (Kingmax) PC3200 + 256MB Nanya PC2700 (which comes with Ferrari 3200) - working as 1256MB but at PC2700 speed

My thoughts, The Mushkin (Kingmax) 1G PC3200 SODIMM ram is unable to work at PC3200 speed with Ferrari 3200. It works at PC2700 speed however.

Anyone tried other PC3200 ram on Ferrari 3200? espically 1GB stick? (I know 2 x corsair 512MB CL2.5 is working as reported by other users) Please share your opinion, thx.

If you combine PC2700 and PC3200 ram your system will always tune to the lowest of both.

Use PC3200 and PC4000 combines and you'll be running at PC3200 speeds.

It is funny that you can't boot with only a single module in.

Did you put the single stick under the keyboard or not ? If not you might try that and leave the other slot free.

My test results are:

1) MushKin (Kingmax) 1GB PC3200 under keyboard
+ Nanya (Acer default) 256MB PC2700 in ramslot of notebook back
= 1.25GB working but at PC2700 speed

2) Nanya (Acer default) 256MB PC2700 under keyboard
+ MushKin (Kingmax) 1GB PC3200 in ramslot of notebook back
= 1.25GB working but at PC2700 speed

3) MushKin (Kingmax) 1GB PC3200 under keyboard
+ nothing in ramslot of notebook back
= boot failure - the mahcine locks up and displays nothing when trying to boot

janos_chau: The slot under the keyboard is the 2nd memory slot, so you should try this combination instead:

4) Nothing in ramslot of notebook under keyboard
+ MushKin (Kingmax) 1GB PC3200 in ramslot of notebook back
= 1.00GB working at PC3200 speed?

If it dosen't work then this memory stick is unfortunately incompatible with this notebook.

snorre: thanks, I thought it was the other way around, under the keyboard the second slot.

Indeed, you need to try to put it in the first slot.

But anyhow, using PC2700 and PC3200 together will always give you PC2700 speeds.

Thx snorre, I'll try it out. (I'll have to use my screwdrivers again... )

Yea thx, I understand that. The reason I plugged the PC2700 ram in is to "pull" the ram speed down to PC2700. I will not use the PC2700 256GB stick if I have the 1 GB PC3200 stick working.

Just tried, and I am sorry to tell that

The only resolution seems to be using the MushKin (Kingmax) PC3200 as PC2700.

Ok, then the only other options for 1GB PC3200 SO-DIMM sticks I know of are as follows.

Samsung part. no. M470L2923BN0-C(L)CC:
http://www.samsung.com/Products/Semi...70L2923BN0.htm

Crucial part no. CT12864X40B:
http://www.crucial.com/store/PartSpe...64X40B&cat=RAM

Micron part. no. MT16VDDF12864HG-40B:
http://www.micron.com/products/modul...DDF12864HG-40B

Corsair that's my favorite memory brand unfortunately only offers 1GB SO-DIMM sticks at PC2700 speeds today.

thx for your info, snorre. The reason I chose Mushkin PC3200 is that the ram is supposed to run at 400Mhz with CL 2.5. As I know, all other 1GB PC3200 sticks are CL 3.

It would be perfect if corsair has 1GB stick.

janos_chau: Ok, I understand. Maybe you should contact Mushkin and tell them about this, and maybe they'll force Acer to produce a updated BIOS that are compatible with your memory? Just a thought...

Any update on this, Janos?

I'm about to buy some memory... Seems like my choices are:

A) 2 x 512 mb Corsair XMS 3200 CL2.5 $200 total

B) 1 x 1 gb Kingmax 3200 CL2.5 $235 total

C) 1 x 1 gb Crucial 3200 CL3 $490 total

I would be tempted to try the Kingmax despite your difficulties if not for newegg's restocking fees... I'll be putting this memory in a 3400 - maybe that'll make a difference?

The Crucial memory is too expensive (maybe because it works ). I don't need the full 2 gb now so it would actually be cheaper to buy the 2 Corsair chips now and throw one away later rather than buy the Crucial memory...

If someone else has gotten the Kingmax to work, I would love to get the full 2 gb now with the Kingmax.

2*512 3200 Crucial Works fine in mine if it's of any help.

p.s. My 3400 came with Micron instead of Nanya chips.

So... any solution to this?

I wish I had seen this thread earlier, but I've got the same problem.
Eventually I want to upgrade to 2gb (using the same brand of RAM) so if using only one by itself doesn't work, would two? If not I guess I'll have to get something else...
