Questions from a penny pincher.

Hi everybody, I've been lurking here for about a week, and I've never seen anyone quite as willing to help as you guys, so I decided to register. I've read the threads as far back as I could, but I still have a couple of questions.

First off, I'm still about two months away from my lappy purchase, but I'm pretty sure I'm going with the 8886. I carry a backpack with about 30 pounds of books everyday, so I don't think the weight will bother me, and it just has everything I'm looking for. But, I was wondering what kind of configuration options (or even new Sager models) we will have to choose from in the near future. Will hyperthreading be available then (and what will the price premium be), will there be a new model of ATI or Nvidia GPU, 16 inch UXGA, etc.?

Also, this purchase would be an extremely significant portion of my annual income, so I am wondering about some of the options for lowering the price. I wouldn't need a second hard drive right away, so is there any way to purchase just the bracket and install a second drive myself later on? For that matter, I have a 10 GB drive just gathering dust at the moment, is it possible to buy the Sager without any hard drives at all?

Can the computer be purchased without any RAM (I have a stick of PC2100 from a friend who fried his laptop while simultaneously voiding the warranty)? He's out two grand, but I'm up 256MB. I also don't need an SD stick for the MP3 player, can I get it without?

I don't want anyone to think I'm cheap (when you're practically broke you have no choice), or that I'm trying to deprive Adam of his profit margin, which by all indications he deserves, but I just want to be able to afford a Sager as soon as possible.

And, I don't know how many of you agree, but the option of not having the price of Windows XP tacked onto that of the laptop is a big selling point for me. I already have 3 academic copies of XP Pro from when Microsoft was pimping .Net at my school (UW).

You all (Beebster in particular) have answered every other question I had before I stumbled into this place. Thanks a lot.

buy a 5660 then

you always pay a premium for the latest greatest technology. you didn't mention your "needs" but it is hard to imagine needs exceeding the capabilities of the 5660. the 8886 looks great too but it is more expensive. if you are cost conscious, don't even worry about what the latest greatest tech advance will be in two months, because it will be priced way too high at first. 64 bit processors I hear are biggest thing coming next year but I still went ahead and bought a computer now rather than wait for that. It will be a year or more after they are introduced before the new processors will be priced reasonable enough for me to consider them. I think both PCTorque and the Powernotebooks websites are pretty clear about what you can leave out and how much you save for opting to leave something out, so I would walk through those websites to answer many of your questions. I operate under tight costs constraints too called a wife so I feel for the difficult decisions that await you in the purchase process.

I completely understand what you're saying. What many people do to find the best bang for the $ in general is divide the MHZ/GHZ by the $ amount to find the best bang for the buck.
Trust me, I remember what it was like to wonder what a full tank of gas would be like years ago =)
Like erisalit32 said, you pay extra for the latest and greatest and to many people, it's not the best value.

If your RAM is PC2100 SODIMM RAM, I can try to take care of you to take the price down, but understand I'm limited as to what deals Sager passes to their resellers.

Glad to hear you registered! Welcome! If you've got 2 months before the purchase, I'd say you should be able to get a "now" top of the line model at that point for a great price (they are an incredible price even now). You are like me in that you don't care much about the weight, lol. The 8886 is a great choice. As Adam said, he will do whatever he can do to help you out, and by "can" that means to what he is limited to. I don't think you could ask for any better :-) As has been mentioned, future technologies will be insanely expensive when they first come out. Case in point: the HT 3.06 Ghz P4 is what, like 700 for just the processor? Lol, so you might not be concerned with those things. The nowadays configs will last for a long time to come, which is one of the reasons I'm comfortable buying a sager as opposed to other laptops. Adam has sold the sagers without hard drives before because some people want to buy the IBM drive separate. Although a 10 gig hard drive is prolly 4200 rpm and slow as can be, you could use it. I wouldn't, though, because it will be a HUGE bottleneck, even more so than the current laptop hard disks. But, if you have to for money, by all means :-) I know the feeling. College students :-) I'm in the same position. I love the option to not get an OS... I have the academic WinXP Pro too, lol, so that made me put on a big smile too. Glad to hear we've been of help to you and I hope we can be in the future! Good luck with your purchase!

Wow, you responded really fast. I absolutely understand that you are limited in what you can give as far as configuration, especially for a laptop. Yes, the ram I have is PC2100 in the SODIMM form factor. My main concern was just that I hate already having a perfectly usable part and not being able to use it. The idea of using my 10gig laptop drive as the primary is probably not so great though, considering the detriment to performance.

But, I would like to purchase the bracket for a secondary hard drive and put my 10gig in it for backing up data. Is it possible to just buy the bracket, or am I missing something and the bracket already comes with the 8886 and that's why no one else has ever mentioned it.

At present, I am budgeting about $2200 for my Sager, and I should be able to swing it in about two months. Thank you Adam for responding so quickly and for whatever flexibility you are able to give me on the RAM configuration. I was wondering if I will be able to get the 8886-V with no RAM at that price point as the cash price?

Thanks for replying, Beeb. I must have been writing my reply to Adam when you responded. Yeah, the 10gig would be a bottleneck, so I've chucked that idea. Thanks again for all the help, I generally just lurk on all the forums that I follow, but you and everyone else here made it an easy decision to jump in. Good luck with your studies.

No problem, I agree with you about using the old components that one already owns... I wish I could do that with my desktops more often, but they end up being really old and outdated. Aw well, good luck with your purchase!

Look again at the system builder. I just added the bracket only option so you can put your own hard drive in it.

Thanks. Price seems very reasonable.

Sweet :-) More options! Give it up for the Torque! :-) I'm glad that's on there now, I think it will be worth it for some people to get it and the price is great, as always!

I'd increase the RAM

0110, I think the gain in performance from going with 512MB of RAM carries more bang for the buck in running Windows apps than going with the next processor speed up. I would recommend using that 256MB from your friend to double the standard 256MB rather than keeping just 256MB in your notebook. I think you will appreciate the difference.

I'm actually considering the RAM issue. I may just bite the bullet and get 512 in the system, and then add the RAM that I have to that. I doubt there would be much difference between having 768MB and the V's base configuration of 1024MB.

When I was first looking at laptops, I was mainly considering the Dell, so I'm used to getting ripped off by their configurator (well, pretending to get ripped off). PCTorque's configurator is not nearly as mean to me.
