Wireless Network

In my anticipation of purchasing the 4760 (off course after it has the features of the 8890, I was wondering what wireless kit the "experts" here suggest or like the best. I am new to wireless networking but not afraid to learn or try, even if it is a "bit" difficult, I just want something the is reliable and can still maintain a good speed rate and off course the signal strength not falling up and down all the time. I read a bit about the SKW811 by Complex I believe but I figured with all the manufactur based reviews I thought it would be best to check with people who may or are currently using such a product. I have 3 people in my house and all use laptops which we would love to be able to carry to bed with us. (Because we love 'em sooo much all 3 will be on this network.)

I appreciate all the help and info you guys provide.

well I dont know how good wireless routing technology is, but it shouldnt be hard to do if you got winXP, just plug the connection to the router, and winxp SHOULD pick it up, but I may be wrong.

I was probly gonna get a linksys router or something, but not sure how good they are.

Here is a link that should help explain the current wireless technologies. http://www.linksys.com/edu/wirelessstandards.asp

I think my house is possessed because I have tried a Linksys 802.11B wireless router which did not work to well and I finally settled on a Netgear 802.11A wireless router/Hub/Firewall. Neither of them work to well inside my house so I believe that the house has some spiritual issues. I personally prefer Netgear. It is a little more expensive but has a better presence in the networking equipment arena. Do not get me wrong, for an inexpensive get me started solution, Linksys will work just as well. This is only personal preference. But my Netgear, once I move, will give me up to 54mbps throughput. To setup a wireless network you will need a wireless access point and wireless Pcmcia cards in each laptop that are all the same type. This will allow you to share files etc with each other. If you want to connect to the internet, you will need a wireless access point/router depending on your internet connection. That way you can share files internally and use the same internet connection to surf the web. Hope this helps.

Thanks alot, for the info i really appreciate it, I was beginning to feel like an ass because I may have asked a question that was too stupid to get an answer.

Not a problem..........the Sagers you can buy from Powernotebooks.com or PCTorque all have to option of getting the wireless card preinstalled into the laptop. Thus keeping your pcmcia card slots available for other things. The have the 802.11b, 802.11g or 802.11a+g available for installation.

Let's say you order a laptop without a network card. Is the antenna in the screen frame still there so that if I wanted to add a network card on my own later, would I be able to?

james, the antenna is wired around the screen

second, i would wait for the newest routers and tech to come out since the 802.11g standard was just fully approved so now the tech can be fully compatible
