Broken USB Port, fixable by me?

Today the little plastic black piece in the middle of the top USB port broke off inside my mouse plug. This caused an Power Surge Error to come up in XP. I have a Dell 8600. I got the piece put back in finally right to get rid of the error (message would not go away), but was wondering if there is an easy fix to this, if the USB ports can be replaced by an end user. I'd rather not send it to Dell being as it's a minor problem that is not causing any kind of critical failure, as of yet.

I doubt it .. If I remember from when mine was open the USB ports are soldered to the motherboard and Dell won't send you the parts letting you solder them and keep your warranty.

Don't try to fix it yourself... please, please, please, for the love of all that is sacred send it into Dell and have them replace it. There is no way an inexperienced user (I'm assuming here) could perform such a fix without serious risk of causing further damage. Suck it up and send it in is my advice.

I agree with sakor, i am familiar with component replacement and the normal user would have at LEAST a 75-90% chance of frying the unit or causing worse damage than you started off with.

With my experience, I would still have dell do it, cause if they screw up, they have to fix it. Definately not an easy fix.

Well, they have all said it. No, it isn't an easly fixable part. Now with that out of the way, do you have a warranty? I have been able (on one occasion, mind you) to super glue that plastic tab back in. I would reccomend against it, but if it's a 'do-or-die' deal, and the four little metal connectors are unbroken, it can be done. If the metal connectors are broken, send it to Dell. The whole port will have to be changed out, and it is attached to the board.
