need help on finding good gaming book

Thread Starter
I've kinda given up on looking for a good gaming laptop for a while so i would like to hear what you people at the forum suggest. Heres what i'm looking for:
Proc: (powerfull/fast like a p4 3.0or higher or a good athlon64)
Ram: at least 512mb
ATI mobile Radeon9700 128mb
40gig-60gig 5400rpm hdd
15.4 normal or wide screen
I do NOT care about the weight of the laptop or the color(s) or the batt life
remember this is a laptop that will be used 90% for gaming so any other componet suggestions are welcomed

thanks for any help

p.s. i would like to (if possible) to not spend much more than $1,600 or $1,700 so the cheaper the better for me.

The Dell Inspiron 9100 and the Sager 5690 are probably your best fits if you're going for some name brands.

The only Athlon64 notebook that probably fits your bill is that Uniwill that's also known as the Battalion S-Turbo over at ibuypower.

i would not recommend Mobility Radeon 9700. I am very dissatisfied with it. Go with a Dell 9100 with 256mb MR9800 video card. about 75-85% better performance than that MR9700 pos :-/ the MR9700 is okay for older games...but personally inadequate for newer games like Doom3 and Half Life 2 / CS Source.

the sager 4750 is an excellent DTR for gaming. It has a nice set of built-in 5.1 speakers too, something i have looked all over for in portables but could not find.

definitely go for a 1gig RAM...and the 7200 rpm HD might actually make a difference with doom3 and the like...i dunno, havent tried it (hah, my computer isnt even here yet)

In your price range the GamePC GPN-A64B is probably the best buy:

Or the MWAVE N258KA:
http://www.mwave.com/mwave/skusearch...ria=nb-ba20408

Or the rayNote 258KAO:

You can configure these like you want too

I understand that you don't recommend the 9700 as IROQ3 suggested for himself. However, I think you were a victim of the Acer Ferrari (and other notebooks as well) marketing. I won't reactivate this endless discussion again... but don't expect the Ferrari to perform as a "Ferrari", specially compared to other notebooks that are way above it (9100, for instance). As the name says (Mobility), you can't expect much on such card (as desktop-like), let alone compare it to a huge DTR one such as the MR9800 256mb. This card requires huge cooling facilities, while the 9700 can fit the "quite-mobile" to "mobile" segment (from 15.4" to 14" AND < 6.8 lbs), not even talking about its clock (the clock of it depends on the notebook).

Sorry if you bought your Ferrari expecting too much of it...

@IROQ3 - If you're using this notebook 90% for gaming, buy the Dell 9100 w/ the MR9800 256mb. No doubt about it, but the price....

DDDa, 'cmon you make things sound worse then what they are.

The M9700 128 is a good gaming card, I play a lot of games on it without a single problem. I have a desktop next to me with a Raddy 9600XT and I don't notice the difference.

The only moment when I notice a real slowdown is with Doom3 at high settings with all the eye candy on 1280X1024.

The Dell 9100 is not a portable but a TRANSportable, so don't compare the Dell and the Ferrari, they are completely different.

People tend to mix up Portable and TRANSportable.

i actually didn't get the Ferrari b/c I expected it to perform as a ferrari, I knew it was all a nice paint job... however, I did expect my 128mb mr9700 to run MUCH better than 32mb geforce fx go5100. Good enough to run HL2 WELL. My 32mb geforce fx go5100 runs the CS source almost as well as my ferrari does.

i'm getting 1gig of Corsair xms ram, as recommended by snorre. Hopefully this helps.

Hyogen

Sorry to hear you're dissapointed with that MR9700 w/128
I have only a MR9600 with only 64meg and DOOM 3 and FarCry(two most demanding games out there) run very very well for me and with just the notebooks factory stock drivers.
I would think on that MR9700 of yours they both should fly...

ACER 1712 if you can stand the huge size and weight

http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...133977&_LOC=US

p.s. acer just released the 1714 with a 3.4.ghz P4 and a DVD supermulti drive but it's about $400 more, the 1712 may be a little difficult to find for right now but the 1711 was available for a while after the 1712 so im sure you can still find it

Did you read my post?

I'm not crazy to compare the Dell w/ the Ferrari. It's almost as comparing apples with oranges, even if they're directed to the gaming people. In fact, my post was exactly against the fact that hyogen was kind of "comparing" the 9100 w/ the Ferrari. Read again, please. I told him that he can't expect "desktop-like" performance from them. It seemed he was disappointed exactly for this reason (he bought one thing expecting too much).

I just think that the 9100 is superior to the Ferrari for pure gaming. I'm against putting them on the same boat.

Want a gamer for sub $1600...see my sig. The system is really nice. Only get 1gb ram of course. Very fast, gets through all my games, and it isn't so heavy...until you throw in the power brick...which is in fact...A BRICK. Battery life is roughly 2 hours of basic tasks, around an hour of gaming. You might hear heat concerns....they are true, but not that overly true. It does get warm, and makes a mighty fine space heater in the winter time, but it is never so hot it is uncomfortable or that it shuts down due to an overheating problem.
