Hey guys, I've been reading through all the posts that I've been able to find on the MR9800 upgrade. I myself have a I9100 with a 9700MR in it currently. I ordered a MR9800 last Friday and it shipped today. I have been trying to find out all that I can about the upgrade and how the install will be handled. When I placed my order, I received two order numbers. One being for the installation part. My question is, has it been resolved about who is to do the install? Is Dell going to send a tech, or just walk people through it over the phone? My only concern is that I desperately do not want to void my warrenty because I paid a nice chunk for it. If anyone could either fill me in or even give me a link where this may have already be answered I would be very appreciative, because I may have missed a previous post about this question being asked/answered. Also, even though this was advertised for the XPS, it is still find for 9100 owners to buy right? I know it will fit because they are the same physically, but I know that Dell has their quirks about things. Once again, thankyou, I know this has been beaten to death already.

you'll likely be one of the first that gets the correct procedure. Dell should be contacting you once they have notice you've received the card.

Yes, they'll be sending someone to install it. Not sure how long it'll take to get them out there, guess you can let us all know hehe

as for the warranty, any dell product is covered under the warranty, installed by your or by dell. the "difference" is, if YOU mess up the laptop during the install, you sol. if Dell messes something up, like scratching Whackamacs case, then they are liable for that damage.

any installs have the possibilty of damaging the system. Heck, you could blow up a computer trying to change the ram if the stars aligned correctly putting in the card is very easy, but if you are not comfortable with doing tech work yourself, leave it for them.

I pesonally have no problem with pulling the install myself. I've been building rigs for roughly 4 or 5 years now. The only reason I would have to be uncomfortable with doing it myself would be that like you said, the stars could align just right and "boom" Anyway I'll see how it turns out. I've put in an email to Mike, and maybe I'll get my own sales rep, like most here seem to have been able to do I should be recieving the card tomorrow if everything goes according to schedule at this point. Too bad I'll be out of town until late in the evening. No matter though, I'll stay up til it gets put in if need be Thanks for the info.

I still can't beleive that mine is shipping out with the same batch as ya'lls. I feel bad since most everyone here has been agonizing about it for over a month, and I just stepped in last Friday.

Mine is listed as SHIPPED as of TODAY... InTransit.... Ordered on 09/01... SO I guess they are shipping these bad boys again, guess another shipment arrived, I have an IXPS and also have paid the 96 install fee so I will post whenever I am contacted by a rep..

OK DUH - Just read the previous page, I guess EVERYONE's shipped today, well if ANYONE has a dell rep out to install let us know how it goes and how fast that happens,??? I too would have a very hard time not installing mysellf...

I called today and was told I couldn't order the part.. it was around 7pm EST when I called however... I'll try again tomorrow during the day and try to get someone more intelligent.

However, my question is what part # are you guys ordering?

I was trying with 320-4058 earlier... when that failed as "unavailable" I tried XPSVID and was told "that is set to $0.00 and is only for new computer orders, not upgrades.".

well mine hasn't shipped yet, but i ordered on 9/2. hopefully i didn't miss the cut off point, but it looks like i might have.
fudd you must have had a dip XPSVID "is" the upgrade, and it flags the other part number you mentioned and the install.

just try again in the morning, or search dell's site
post #53 of 123
Just type in 9800 in the search box on Dell's site. I'm not sure why Dell has been giving people such a hard time with phone orders.
Well, er, I guess the *MAIN* point of my post is I don't want to pay $360 for the freaking XPSVID part which includes an installation fee when my iXPS came with a "free" installation upgrade offer already....

I just want the base part for the video card itself......

I refuse to pay dell extra dollars.

Ordered Yesterday

I ordered my 9800 yesterday and I got an email saying the part shipped today but when I check the website the part showing shipped is the "free" install of $93.00 but it does not show the actual part as being shipped.
I also ordered mine on 09/02. Still showing as "In Production" with an "Estimated Ship Date" of on or before 09/27. I was charged $94.46 for the installation fee and $281.99 for the 9800 incl. onvernight shipping. I emailed Dell Support and told them I was going to install the card myself and they refunded the $94.46 back to me so now I just have to wait for my card to arrive....

efudd, had you check whatever check box, or asked for the upgrade option if you did a phone order, you'd have gotten an email already about the upgrade and free install offer. That you didn't means Dell didn't have you registered as one of the 30-40 people who opted in for the free install.

Now that you're freaking out, understand that Dell had the intention for people to let them know up front if they wanted the upgrade, but no one here has yet mentioned ever seeing such a choice on the website while they were ordering. Every indication people here had was it would be free for all XPS owners.

There is no solution as yet. but there is a need from xps owners. Just as many have done about the headphone hum issue, and now Dell is making a new mobo to fix it, XPS owners need to log tons of complaints about the charged install fee on the 9800 when they were never offered an option on the website for opting in to that program. You need to let them log you complaint and try take the time to research your order and get as many other complaints as possible in. I suspect by the end of September they will have enough complaints that they may start refunding the install fees to XPS owners. But it won't happen if every one of the xps ownders doesn't complain so they REALLY know it's an issue. Right now they think you guys simply didn't bother to select a check box when you ordered.

Tracking number?

Howdy! Has anyone gotten a tracking number from their Order Status page on Dell's website? Mine is supposed to be delivered today, as I paid for overnight shipping, but Dell hasn't given me any other information then the generic "In Transit to Local Carrier" message.
I got mine earlier this morning. I always email order support to get tracking numbers when they aren't provided through order status. Mine will be here before 3pm.

People that have installed the 9800 themselves, how hard is this if you follow the instructions? For some reason I feel that after receiving the part and waiting 2 weeks for an installation will be difficult....
Thanks,
Jed
