Anyones MR9800 kit ship yet? - Page 5

I'm sorry, but the seemingly very knowledgeable support rep I had on the phone said that if I were to install it myself and screw up, I would void my warranty, which makes perfect sense. Why should Dell have to pay for my mistakes? He said they DO have people install upgrades on other notebooks with techs on the phone helping to install them, and that will NOT void your warranty, but not on the XPS. A tech is required supposively. I could very well be daring and do it myself, as I have the knowledge, but I'd much rather have someone else, since I've never worked on a laptop before.

yeah, i checked on this a few places Corvus, you don't mess up the warranty when installing any dell parts. the issue is, if you were to break something while deinstalling/installing, they would not cover "that" problem since you broke/scratched etc.

Is there a chance you could break a tab on something or mess up one of the connector wires? Sure, anything is possible. But thankfully Dell designed all the wires with pull tabs or pull bars, so when you use the part they included which pulls the connector and not the wire, I don't think you have to worry about damaging the wiring. It is amazingly simple, but, at the same time, it helps to have worked on many computers before.

If you are the least bit worried, just wait. it's not like there are any games out that are UNPLAYAble without the 9800 you've waited this long, what's another week if you have any concerns?

MYHRE - What was the hardest part about the install for you? I have installed RAM and hard disks before on desktops, but never messed with laptops. Was it fairly easy or would you say one would need experience for this task? I mean 96 bucks is 96 bucks and if it is fairly simple I will get the refund for that...
Thanks,
Jed

Yeah, that's what I meant. Installing is fine, but if you screw up while installing, that's not. I pretty much draw the line at having to detach large parts, ie the screen, etc. Also, putting things back might be a little dicey. I've worked on MANY desktop computers before, but with not having any experience with a laptop, (this is my first), I'm just going to wait for the tech to install it. (I'll be watching every step to learn about the process however.) I'm not complaining that it's taking that long. I'm playing Star Ocean: Till the End of Time on my PS2 anyways. :0)

I would say that the hardest part was just being worried about dropping any of the screws into the chassis of the notebook. It was extremely easy. The only other thing that I can think of that I was a little overcautious about was when I pulled the keboard clip up and out. I was just a little aprehensive about it because I didn't realize that I needed to pull it straight up and only thought that it needed to be pulled back at first. All in all it was one of the easies things I've ever done computer wise. Dell makes it very easy by adding in all of the connectors, unlike some companies that just have ribbons that insert into slots, and that can go terribly wrong if the ribbon gets worn, or misaligned. But then again I am looking at this from the point of view of being an avid system modifier, system builder, and overclocker enthusiest. I work around small electronics everyday, but I think anyone could be able to do this with relative ease. But also, as mentioned before, if you feel uncomfortable or question your ability to do this in any way, I would wait on a qualified technician.

I have to admit I was shocked at how easy the monitor was removed. I have only had 2 laptops in the past, but removing the monitors was a huge ordeal. With this thing you just unplug 3 wires and remove 4 screws and it slides out of the laptop. Was really cool. In some ways I feel better that I know my laptop hardware wise a lot better now. But on the other hand, this has removed a lot of the mystery and such from this beatiful machine.

I've gotten everything set up with the new 9800MR, Omega drivers and all, and I just ran a second 3dmark03. It just pulled a 6498, which is 1000points over my first benchmark with the 9800MR. I'm really happy with the card so far. All I need to do now is get my install fee refunded.

BTW stock speeds are core350/mem300. ATItool has already bumped the core up to 385 without errors.

Got installed here fine too. The hardest part for me was the left hindge cover. Everything else was easy and Dell did a fine job making it easy to access stuff. Cables are easy to pull out, minimal use of screws, etc. Guess these things use liquid cooling?

Did you try the regular 9800 drivers from dell? If so, how do they compare to the omegas? Any overclocking yet?
Yeah, I only scored 5200 with dells drivers in 3dmark03, but I got 6500 with the omega drivers. and the lesson is, USE THE OMEGA. Anyway Right now ATItool has my card running over 400mhz on the core. Anyone know how good ATItool is at keeping the core at safe levels of overclock? This is my first time using it. I always used rage3d before. I'll get it full oc'ed and then post some more benches.

Make that, up to 415 now....hmm....I hope these are semi safe clock speeds. I'm nervous about throwing that much of an oc at a brand new card.

Actually it uses heat pipe cooling. As does the CPU. It basically displaces the heat to a point where it can easily be removed from the system.

Up to 445 now.....It's getting close to a 100mhz overclock.

I just installed ATItool on my orange sig rig, and I'm going to see where it maxxes my 9800XT's frequencies at since I already know it's limit.

Okay, so I've settled on 400/350 for 24/7 settings for now, which gets me roughly a 7.1k 3dmark03.

Well ATItool was dead on for my overclock on my 9800XT. It overclocked it only 2mhz faster than what I had it personally set at. Still, a 100mhz increase on a core makes me nervous for my 9800MR. I think I'll stick with the 400/350 for a while. No reason to go for insanity right off the bat.

Myhre - Thanks for the heads up, 96 bucks equals 2 games for me so I will probably go ahead and put this sucker in myself. I just reconfigured the card on the dell site and with a 35 off coupon it was 340 configured and shipped... Course I paid 387, thinking that was a sweet deal... Anyway, thats dell for ya always changing prices!!
Will post how the install of the 9800 card goes after it arrives...
Thanks,
Jed

These forums are great...

I found that the 9700 would oc about 100mhz as well.

ATITool went as high as 550, but I just couldn't push it that hard do I went 516.

have to get off my lazy butt and try the 9800 at like 425 or something, but nothing I am playing right now to worry about it.

Exactly, that's the way I feel about it. I'm not doing anything right now that would push the limits of this card, so I'm not going to try and stress it yet. The card does seem like a very promising overclocker and the memory seems exquisite and full of potential.

And for my final overclock results. Core 400/ Memory 350 and 7360 in 3dmark03. I have a feeling it is not even close to being maxxed, but that is an absolutely beautiful score for a laptop vid card in my opinion, so I'm very very happy.

What is the highest resolution and quality you guys with the 9800 can you play Doom3 at, without choppiness ofcourse? Just curious...

I'll install my spare copy of Doom3 on it later and give you some FPS/Res/Setting references.

BTW does anyone know if I8kFangui will give the gpu temp for a 9800 in a 9100? Mine won't and I was wondering if there was anything that I could do to remedy this? Heh, I hate posting so many times like this, feel like I'm cluttering up the thread.

Woot! I just got my installation fee refunded.

heya Whackamac, I'm curious is your center panel bowed up a little bit in front and to the left of the led's? Mine was like that from the factory and even after taking it off and looking it over really well to see what could be causing it, I can't find anything. It's just bowed up a little bit, hardly noticable unless you've actually worked around that spot closely.

It is easy to install, did mine and it took less than twenty minutes. I printed the steps off the net (also in my owners manual) and just followed all the steps. I was kind of shocked at how easy this thing is to take apart. Also, you get the added benefit of knowing whats in there.....
