I wonder what the response time is on this new lcd

OK, so while waiting for my GRT to ship tomorrow...I decided to call one more time to grill customer service to make sure the 16.0" SVGA screen comes with the GO5600....

After being reassured when I ordered yesterday, guess what? It comes with the GO420, which they found out only after calling the product manager.

I cancelled my order. Now, to get the GO5600 I can either re-order a custom built GRT100 with the UXGA 1600x1200 16.1" screen, or order the GRT170 preconfigured machine which comes with the 5600 and a 16.1" SXGA+ 1400x1050 screen. Ugh.

Sony's rep said there was a ton of confusion surrounding the 5600 or 420 issue, and they were begging the website guys to make the specs more clear on the website.

the Sony site cracks me up!

"Sony GRT Series starting at $999"

to get what everybody wants you need to cough up $3800......

2169.00. add ~70 to this for the 512MB module you will be buying from crucial or somewhere else with a good rebate/deal going. if you want 1024 for some reason (diminishing returns...) then add about 150. add an extra 50 for a 60GB HDD if thats your bag. oh, if for some god-unknown reason you want a p4-m over a p4 2.8, then add that in...at a price.

so 2169. wow not too bad. i win.
i forgot to mention, you can add dvd-rw capability for 150 and dvd+/-rw for something like 250. not my thing so i didnt add it. but that still puts it at less the 2500.

Ah, stupid Sony. Oh well, guess I'll wait for the 5680 .

ehhh... I said new type of LCD screen

yea really gamma ray, who would want a 16.1 inch screen thats inferior to a screen thats coming out if the laptop doesnt have amazing performance (new gpu/motherboard/ram) to make up for the average screen.

but hey if they need a laptop asap then good for them. Laptops are almost as fast as desktops but the gpus are whats holding them back... hds are a thing of the past since in a few months there have the 7200rpm hds out.
you cannot get the new lcd yet coolguy. and i dont call uxga average, but apparently you have different standards (doesnt sager use uxga).

at the time, i thought it was the new one till i read the pdf...doesnt really matter though. the price is still damn good for the new tech you are getting. if you want to wait for the new screen, i would estimate 200 more at most. lcds only cost so much.

amazing performance? how about the 5600go that scores %50 higher in 3dmark03 on most tests...maybe thats not amazing.

im not advocating the sony - im not getting one (the batt is only one hour!). but im just tired of the automatic slagging of anything that isnt sager yet is clearly comparable or better to what sager currently offers. the sony, in this case, offers a superior machine for a lower price.

but whatever...i digress. lets all go for chinese.

Is this new VAOI GRT190G a desktop replacement? Is it good for gaming with the 2.80 Gigs???
Sony Support is rather iffy about the GRT. From the specs alone, it should be very good for gaming (if you get the Geforce 5600), but who knows. I've tried several times to ask them whether or not the 16.0'' SXGA screen comes with the Geforce 5600 Go. Every time the answer was either yes or "I'm not sure".
If it's good for gaming then it's perfect for me. Also because it has top of the line multimedia components. I think I can find all of this in the sager 8887/8890, but not as good as the sager. I think sager is superior for gaming, but not the TV Tuner, CD Burner, etc...

How does this sony model compare to the upcomming Toshibas(S607/P25-S507)????
There was a recent thread on the Dell boards where the poster bought a Sony GRT170 from Fry's and ran an initial batch of benchmarks, with the following reported results:

3Dmark2001SE_b330 - "the Sony got a VERY disappinting 9255!!! ...reran the bench. The sony increased to a still pathetic 9260"
3dMark03 build 330 - "and got 1802. That's somewhat better..."

Sony Viao PCG-GRT170 specs:
--------------------------
All factory installed software
2.8 GHz Pentium 4
512 MB RAM
GeForce 5600FX go

btw, what's the main difference between the GRT170 above, and the forthcoming GRT190G with the XBrite screen?
same as the toshiba scores

wouldnt give a damn about the benchmarks since its the same gpu the tosh has

the only thing I would be interested in is the 16.1 Xbrite screen (wide angle viewing)
It's only available online???
