SP2 on 5680 with XP pro - should I?

I'm a gamer, my main games are neverwinter nights, sacred, diablo 2, ect.

I'm on a wireless network. I am having some problems running things like mozilla, gaim, and mIRC. Cannot connect type problems. Figure its my D-Link DI-624 revision A, and they recommended trying to change the MTU by increments of 10 until it works. Haven't finished that yet, but it hasn't worked on the first 10 changes. Any suggestions?

Well, I was. I'm now posting this message from my wife's computer, which has SP2 and it works fine.

Mine went from a few programs not working on the net, to none working, even though i connected to my router.

Guess I may have to format my hard drive. Sigh.

Ok I take that back. I had Zonealarm installed but I only ran it when I used dial-up because of my router's built in firewall. Works now that I uninstalled it. I'll probably reinstall the newest version since its probably just the settings that need to be changed.

i still have sp1 corp on my laptop but sp2 corp on my desktop no complaints so far... super stable and games play great... ill try sp2 on my laptop when she needs a nice format... until then sp1 corp stays... really there is not to big of difference between the two.. mostly secruity improvments and a improved builtin firewall.. and direct x 9c.. thats about it

I'm running SP2 on my 5670 w/ XP Home. I had only one problem. Every time I right-clicked on a file explorer had an error and closed. The strange part was I could right-click a folder and it would be okay, just files were messing it up. I uninstalled and reinstalled SP2 to see if it was a just a screwed up installation. Fixed it while it was back to SP1, but when SP2 was installed again it screwed up. I then made an exception for explorer.exe from DEP (Data Execution Prevention) and it now works fine.

Installed XP2 on my 5670 with XPpro, and then it would only boot in safemode.

So, fortunately I was able to use the recovery tool to just go back to where I was on SP1. Haven't found a solution, and haven't had time to deal with a full re-installion of windows. This is, I just did a full format and re-install only a month ago.

Had no problems with my 5680. Works fine, and the security in IE is MUCH better. You can turn off Active-X without getting annoying message boxes.

I'm running into networking issues. I use my 5680 both at home and work (gotta get the tax write-off ). At the office, I connect to my desktop using Firewire. At home, it's via the Wireless.

95% of the time, I have to reboot when switching between the home and office. This includes having the SP2 firewall disabled. I suspect it's an issue w/ the Intersil (Prism) NIC that came w/ my laptop... WindowsUpdate think's it s a Netgear WG511 -- I don't think so...

The only problem I had with sp2 was it broke wireless. I still haven't gotten it to work again. The drivers are there, the network is there, firewall is off. The GNWIAG utility shows the network, but I can never connect. It doesn't work in linux either, so maybe the card just died. Are they all that easy to replace?

D-Link wireless is the fasted I've ever used. But, also the buggiest. It can be a downright pain in the butt.

SP2 rocks, but be sure your system is free of spyware before you install. If spyware is on your system, SP2 install can and will bomb. (I speak from experience on this...)

I've not tried SP2 on my Sager yet. Too lazy I guess. But on a Sony laptop, I do believe it improved it's connectivity, and made the drivers more accepting of the XP method for wireless admin.

Linksys has it's issues too. I'm fighting a firewall issue with Microsoft's FTP server, Works great on a D-Link, but fails on a Linksys. Linksys won't fix it either, they want me to "upgrade" GRRRRRR!!! I haven't tried Netgear, but hear from friends it's considered best.

I fixed my wireless by going into Admin Services and disabling the windows automatic wireless configurator. SP2 apparently flipped some switch in it that kept wireless from working.

It may depend on your driver, but it should be under the properties for the network connection.

In control panel open "network connections"

Right click on your "wireless network connection" and choose properties.

Click on the "Wireless Networks" tab at the top of the properties dialog box.

Check the "Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings." box

Now Windows instead of your driver will manage the connection and it's security, etc etc. For some drivers this may or may not be a good thing. For me it's not a good thing, but in the past with other hardware it was almost needed to get the connection to work right. YMMV of course.
