I was playing a game on my 4780 last night and it locked up almost as if it was a heat lockup and now will not turn on. this computer is used as a desktop mostly and is moved at most once a month, it sits on a notebook cooler so i have never had problems with overheating and is plugged into an UPS. now when i turn it on the fans come on, and a few seconds later it beeps but doesnt actually start up, nothing comes on the screen, and nothing comes on the external monitor if i hook one up. what could be the casue of this?

Try disconnecting the external monitor. Also, try doing a reset in the bios and unplug the power for a little to reset it, and try again. I forget exactly where it is in the bios but it'll be there.

Open it up and reseat your memory sticks, check your harddrive to make sure the cable isn't loose.

thanks for the advice, i did check the memory, as for resetting the bios there is no video display at all. sager finally called me back and i have an RMA number to ship it back, looks like the notebook just decided to give up the ghost

If you can hear the system boot up and there is no video then give this a try:

Get a Q Tip or other ear swab and look on your laptop for a small button that is on the bottom lid of the display. This is the tab that turns the display on when you open the case. Give this tab a gentle cleaning and that should restart your screen. On my 4760 that tab is toward the front right of the keyboard at the edge. Its a small hole and you can see the pin prodruding from it. This is where the power button is on my 4760.

If you DO not hear your lappy making any sounds when booting up then backlight on the display went or could be a loose ribbon cable.

Hope this helps

I have the same problem as LOKI008. Just watching the series "24", my 4780 died!
No screen, no boot.

HD, RAM, battery and CPU work.

Tried ext keyboard/monitor --> nothing...

Damn 4780!

i hope that these are 2 flukes and not a problem with the series. i should be getting my 4780 back this week from RMA hopefully. damn being in CT with shipping times from CA.

Hi, I have a 5660 with the same problems, along with a couple of other 5660 owners.

I would be curious as to what Sager determines the problem with your 4780, as I cannot send to sager without incurring $200US shipping costs and non-warrantee service charges.

I am curious as to what this means.

loose ribbon cable.
I have taken apart fully the computer many times, and reconnected all connections etc. I know quite a bit about the electronics and computers, but little about how the actual components and how they work. This Hard drive cable, does it reside in the actual hard drive because my HDD connects to the HDD converter board in my computer via pin slots.

some notebooks have a ribbon cable just like a desktop would, just much shorter, while others do not. basically he was just saying make sure the harddrive was seated correctly and nothing is loose
