Dell DJ or Apple iPod?

Thread Starter
I'm currently looking to buy an MP3 player to go along with my new 9100 and have been fretting over the two. For around $260 for either one I can get 20GB. Some of the differences are that the Dell DJ comes with an inline remote and a free copy of MS Plus DME and $25 of free songs at the Dell music store. The iPod however comes with just the player and headphones for $269 (thru education). No remote, which would cost $35 extra. I would love to get the Apple but as I see it, the Dell comes with a lot of extras that make the price still cheaper than the iPod.

I just got a 20 gig iPod and I absolutely love it. I have never messed with a Dell DJ so I cant speak for it, but if you got 300 bucks grab you the iPod. You can go over to Apple.com, the education part and save 30 bucks.. thats what i did. Even though I have been out of college for 5 years now hehe

my ipod is nice, but i gotta say if i did it over again i wouldnt buy it. The month after i bought it apple came out with the next gen ipod and dropped mine from their support. I had always hopped they would offer a firmware update that would allow me to make playlists on the go. but nope. I don't know if dell would be any better, but I really didnt like the way apple treated me.

I would suggest waiting if you are in no hurry to buy the mp3 player. There is an expected Dell DJ revision, as well as the Ipod 5th Gen to be unveiled by the end of 2004 (in time for the holiday season)

I got the Dell DJ 20 GB about a month ago and am very happy with it. If you want a very good mp3 player and don't care about style or having the "coolest" thing, then the Dell is fine. If you just want the white headphones to be like everyone else, then you won't be happy unless you have the iPod. The iPod is very nice, but the Dell isn't too far behind. I personally really like how it feels in my hand and Dell's support is far better than Apple's. With the iPod you get 90 days of support, the Dell gives you at least 1 year and Dell is much easier to get things replaced or fixed than Apple. Plus the battery life of the DJ is twice as good as the iPod. The battery life, support, and cost were the main reasons I chose the DJ. I ended up getting the 20 GB DJ, remote control, car charger, FM transmitter, and 25 songs on MusicMatch for $250, try getting that for an iPod. (Free shipping and 20% off coupons are great). It really comes down to a few things, cost and image. If you really care about having the "coolest" item, then the iPod is a must. If you just want a good mp3 player and money is an issue, then the DJ should do just fine.

After going through three HDD MP3 players I feel the iPod's strongest point isn't the cool factor, but rather the polished interface and software. The iPod is virtually bug-free, the user interface is extremely intuitive and well-designed, and computer integration is very smooth as well. With the other players I've tried, this sort of seemless operation just cannot be achieved. But on the other hand, the iPod is a mainstream product with limited support for advanced codecs and features. If it wasn't for its limits it would certainly be the best player in my opinion.

Go the ipod...

you are very incorrect about the support. the ipod has a 1 year warranty as well. oh yeah, and get the ipod, you won't regret it.

Long live the IPOD

I'm taken time off from my busy college schedule to say one thing: buy an iPod...or suffer the wrath of the mp3 gods

Ok, I admit, I have been reading "The Iliad" for wayyyyyy too long.

Creative Zen is 40gigs for the same price

I love it!

I do like the DJ, but the iTunes store is apparently one of the largest online music stores... more choices=more enjoyment. I don't know whether the DJ is compatible, so I may just be picking a random point.

Don't buy either of them. Get an MP3CD player. You can't beat Panasonic's $50 AM/FM MP3CD player.

I've not used a Dell DJ, but I've used iPods extensively, as well as MP3 CD players, an Archos JBMM and now am using a iRiver iHP120.

The iHP120 is far better for what I do (mostly audio books), but I tend to recommend an iPod for anyone who wants a very easy to use device.

The wired remote with backlit LCD and the 15 hour (I actually get 15, not sure what it's rated at) batterly life of the iHP really kick ass, though. I fly internationally and the battery life was a real issue.

The iRiver has a lot of other features, like on device encoding (even supports optical in/out), FM Radio, and afaik the highest rated sound quality.

I honestly don't think you'd be unhappy with any product tho - they're all nice.

I love my iPod but the thing that sucks is that I live in Canada and thus don't have access to the iTunes music store. You figure Apple would have had Canada integrated in their online store by now.

Ipod, definitely. It has a great look and feel, intuitive interface and Apple's customer service is very good. I took my 40GB into the Apple store at South Coast Plaza because it died (actually I dropped it) and they gave me a new one with basically no questions asked.

You will also find a lot more accessories available for the ipod because it is the most popular mp3 player.
