Still need help with the video driver

Hi everyone, my laptop is running fine, I just received it on Saturday. I noticed that the driver that it came installed with was like 6.14....... In all of the discussions on this forum, I have heard people talk about the omega drivers, and the ati 8.05 I want to run the driver that will give my 9700 the best performance. I tried uninstalling the driver and installing the omega last night and hosed it up. I had to end up getting out my driver disk and reinstalling the original. Can someone give me a concensus on what the best driver is, (Why do they release a new laptop with the 6.14.... if there are newer drivers out there??) where I can get it, and a quick walk through on how to do the install. Would greatly appreciate it.

Ron,

Don't uninstall the ATi driver...just install the Omegas right over top...they're designed to be installed that way.

Word!

But if you want to do it properly and not get corrupt or bad drivers UNINSTALL the drivers. Restart Cancel the new hardware.
Install new driver Restart.

Omegas do not work like that Devion...they require files from the ATi/Alienware drivers.

That's what he did and he got the error message.

Well I always do that even with the omegas and i never got any error.

Hmmm...I always do. It looks for an INF file from the ATi drivers. Mayhap the latest Omegas have been tweaked? Because I tried the Omegas from an uninstallation about 6 months ago and it did not work.

Hey Craig, you are right, I got that same error when I uninstalled the ati and then ran the driver cleaner program, rebooted, and the error popped up. It kept saying it needed a file from the ati driver. So I just installed the factory driver back on there. Could you explain to me if you get the chance, why do they not install the latest driver when they ship the system????

They install THERE latest driver not omegas or ati;s

Thanks for clearing that part up for me. I thought the driver for the card came from ATI. Thats why I was confused about the version number. So I guess the question should be then, is the AW driver better/same/worse than the ATI/Omega drivers????

Ron,

That's the $5 question...many guys have had success with the AW drivers and many have had success with the Omegas.

I tried the 8.05's and locked up in Doom3 in 30 seconds...reinstalled the Omeags, and have had zero issues since.

I'm a huge fan of AW but I must admit, the Omegas (in my experience to date) are just more stable.
